Hey guys,

I was hoping for a bit of help understanding SBR's. Specifically, the legality of the length on the Form 4.

So here's my understanding. Let's say you buy a 11.5" SBR. The stamp comes back and everything is good to go. Let's say you want to get another upper....a shorter 10.3" upper. So you sell the original 11.5" upper to fund the purchase of the 10.3" upper.

Now from what I gather, you can't go shorter than what's on your listed on your Form 4 (11.5"). Is this accurate? Or am I just completely lost?

Also, do you have to notify the ATF if you change lengths or caliber of your SBR? I read something that is wasn't mandatory or something like that.

Please correct me if I'm wrong and help me understand this whole deal...lol.

Thank you

My understanding is that you can alter the length as long as it's registered properly as a SBR. I would probably notify BATF of a permanent change in length as a courtesy. I do know that you can change an upper at will to a different length as long as you retain the original registered length upper.

As long as its a registered SBR, you can put any length or caliber upper on the gun. So if its registered as 11.5" .223, you'd be perfectly fine putting a 8" .300 Blk upper on it. You just have to be able to return the gun to its registered condition (which means keep the 11.5" .223 upper somewhere). If you want to sell that upper and permanately change the gun, just send a letter to the ATF to notify them and you'll be ok.
