This blogger is out of a very different world than many of this forum, but I think this is a great story about encouraging a scared woman in a gun shop to take that step into gun ownership. The comments are interesting too.

Pretty good writing. I would have believed it more if he did not add this:
But we'll see what the salesman have to say, they are really experts here, okay?”
:neener:

Good to see someone out there doing what they can. A right-wing Hollyweird type;I bet he feels like an island.

Sad but true. You don’t need a gun very often but when you do you REALLY need it. The bad thing is not knowing how to use one after they get it. Safety, confidence, and skill takes time.
But we'll see what the salesman have to say, they are really experts here, okay?”
He is certainly NOT describing any of the gun shops in my part of the world. :(

I'm fortunate enough to have Williams Gunsight as the local gun shop. Those guys are pretty knowledgeable, and not too proud to find a coworker to help with questions they might not have an answer for...

I'm waiting my turn and so is a young, nervous girl. She's wearing a cream colored linen baby doll with blue grosgrain trim; on her feet, pink flip-flops that just pop off her white skin; her hair is the color of Kansas corn. Mid-twenties, she's the iconic all-American girl.

I like the guy's advice. J-Frame is going to provide enough protection and be simple enough not to confuse this easily confused girl.

I don't subscribe to the wheel guns are better for girls idea. In fact, I don't subscribe to any particular pistol is better suited based on the dangly bits 'tween one's thighs.

You choose the best weapon based on tons of factors. Not a great shot? Get something with higher capacity. Are you going to carry? A wheelgun is generally harder to conceal. Want massive power? Can't really beat a .357 Magnum and that's only going to be in revolver.

Women are totally capable of handling semi automatics. They are no more complicated than kitchen appliances. The pros and cons should be illustrated, not "you're a woman. Get a revolver".

“I can't believe I'm here. I've been against guns and violence my whole life.”

“Ten days?” she cries.

“First you have to take a test, here in the store, a written test. They'll give you a booklet to study from. Then you get a certificate making you eligible to buy a weapon in California. After you purchase the gun there's a ten-day waiting period until you take possession.”

“But why?”

Because of people who were against guns and violence their whole lives.

I didn't read that in what was recommended. He said “Those are .45 automatics. Probably too much gun for you. I'd recommend a simple revolver. Probably a Smith & Wesson J frame, a .38."

Depending on factors, a .45 auto probably IS too much for someone who's never even picked up a gun before, man or woman. And plenty of people have and do stake their lives on a .38 revolver. It's good advice from where I'm sitting.

dogweilder, I may have over read that, but I've heard it said a zillion times. My mother carries a .38 special and I feel sorry for the SOB who tries to attack her. But she's a good shot and enjoys range time.

Women yes, but depends on the woman. My wife doesn't have the hand strength the rack my CZ-75. Automatics are out for her until she lifts some weights or something :(.

Maybe I am unnecessarily mean, but I wouldn't feel sorry for the SOB who tries to attack her. Hopefully it would make the paper and I could read up on his current hospital or morgue stay on keepandbeararms.com.

It's absolutely freakin' enraging that so many are basically helpless when threatened because they've been told all their lives that the most effective tool they can use for self-defense is 'bad' or 'evil'. And that violence used in self-defense is just as bad as violence used by an attacker.

The people responsible for these attitudes have a LOT to answer for...

Hey, a good revolver has some very good points. And after she finds out how good it feels to be prepared in case of trouble and how much fun she can have at the range, she can pick up the semi-auto, or the rifle, or the...
