School me on budget bolt rifles with iron sights

That Mauser Dave DeLaurant mentioned is an interesting option. It looks a lot like the Savage model 1920 with that stock. There is a whole world of old but not fully obsolete sporting rifles out there.

That’s part of the problem with guns. They can last a long time since they get used so little (like a car that drives 100 miles a year and is kept in a climate controlled garage). Or can be worn out in a season of competition. The old ones are fine, but we also need manufacturers to stick around too. They need new markets to stick around so we have to reinvent the wheel so we can get parts for not really obsolete rifles.

I guess this means at the end of the day, an old rifle is fine and so is a new one. Thinking about all this also makes me want a 300 Savage too, but that’s my own problem.

If I were set on a bolt action with irons, I'd be looking at local gun shops, or possibly gunbroker (but the total cost will probably exceed $500 on GB) for a quality used gun. Such as this one:

Since this thread needs more pictures to help enable you, here are my BRNO .270 and CZ .243 and .308 with iron sights. :)

Sounds like a good excuse to start looking at the dusty dirty old bargain bin stuff at your LGS.

I just talked myself into exactly what you are looking for, except in my case it's an M1917 that's been mildly sporterized, stock cut and reshaped, bolt handle reprofiled, with a lyman receiver sight added.
I couldn't turn it down. It was a shootable rifle with a vintage peep sight for the cost of a tank of diesel.
I have a 38 gallon tank but still..for a functional rifle,
Thats cheap fun
