I just bought a Ruger 10/22 and want to mount a scope on it. This will be my first scope. It is just for fun at the range and 100 yards is about as far as I might try to use it - probably less more often.

The shop where I bought the rifle suggests Vortex 2-7X32 or 3-9X40. Are these good choices?

Yes they are. Vortex has an amazing warranty program if you shoild ever need it. Personally I have the Nikon Prostaff rimfire on mine. Has the little BDC holdovers after you zero at 50. Seems to work really good.

I like the Nikon rimfire series, very good glass for the money. Nikon controls their supply chain pricing fairly tightly from what I can tell. I usually wait for a sale plus a coupon from OpticsPlanet.

Vortex has different lines representing different qualities. I would suggest nothing more powerful than a 2-7x.
You are probably looking at a crossfire (low end) or diamondback(middle). I have a 1.5-5x diamondback on my 10/22, and it is a better scope than my Burris ff2 for sure.

Cabalas is having a Nikon sale starting Nov 28.

Prostaff Rimfire 3-9X with BDC 150 reticule + 333 rounds of Winchester ammo for $99.99.

I think that's a pretty good deal.

As I said I am just getting started with scopes so I have questions. One poster noted using nothing more than 2-7X32 - is there a downside to a more powerful magnification?

The higher the magnification, the smaller the field of view gets.

Anything over about 10x magnifies your shakes and wobbles that many times, and makes it difficult to keep the target centered with the x-hairs when shooting without a rest.

Then there is the matter of size.
The 10/22 is a small rifle.
A huge scope hanging off it would just be out of place.

I found that I tended to try and zoom way in and take longer more precise shots that cheap 22lr wasn't up to with a 3-9x, which was not as fun. Also a 3-9 is a bigger scope that looks funny on a 10/22. And lastly, with a 3x scope you can't easily take close range shots like a stick in the creek. I just found that a higher power scope took a lot of the fun out of a plinking gun.

top right of the ad. page 12 of the leaked black friday ad. I don't know if you will be ale to order it online, or if you have to be physically at the store. I know great deals don't generally last long.

Any link available?

That's a pretty good deal. I might spring for that. I have a 10/22 that needs a scope too.

academy has the same scope without the ammo for $99 in their back friday ad.

and gander will have it for $120 in theirs

I'm scoping a 10/22 All Weather, the old "boat paddle" model.

By tomorrow night, this will be mounted:

It's replacing a Weaver 1-3x that has taken up residence on a .22 Crosman air rifle. I know, I'll shoot my eye out. :)

Like RCmodel said, i'm staying with lower magnification for shots that are not from a rest. There's a good chance this optic will move back and forth from this 10/22 to my Ruger Charger while I decide which to mount it on.

I have a couple different 10/22's, both are scoped. My old one has a Leupold 2x7 on it, love that set up.

The other one is the break down pack model, can't remember exactly what it's called, but it breaks down small enough to fit in my back pack. I put a Vortex 3x9 on it, but I'm not going to leave it like that, it's too much glass on what is supposed to be a pack gun. But Vortex does make some decent glass, though I'm not completely sold on their rifle glass, and certainly prefer Leupold at this point.

Mueller Optics APV: 4.5-14x variable, very nice affordable scope. Super popular over on Rimfire Central.
