Recently I found my grandfathers old .22 rifle. Turns out it's still a good shooter. I'm thinking about putting a scope on it. It'll be a 50 yard zero and I may push it to 100 yards at the range occasionally. Budget is $100 to $150. Any input would be great.

I have and love this scope

4x32, very clear, light, good reticle and solid adjustments. I highly recommend it and it is reviewed well throughout the rimfire shooting world for your budget!

I use it on a Marlin Model 60 for the same ranges you are talking. I can hit the Pepsi logo on a can at 100 yards and that is good enough for me.

You didn't state how old it is...You might check e-bay for a period scope. I would think that a 4 power scope would be ideal. Maybe an older Weaver.

Is the make and model of Grandpa's Gun a secret?
If he was young enough to have a rifle with Tip-Off dovetails, adding a scope will be easy. If it lacks them and is not drilled and tapped, the cost would get out of hand.

You will get many different opinions on what scope to get. I'm very pleased with the quality and clarity of the few Nikon scopes I have. I have a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40 BDC scope. It's very clear does well from 25 yards to 100 yards. It can be found for $140 online. The older Bushnell 3-9x32 rimfire scope I have is no where near as clear as the Nikon.

Your JC Higgins was made by High Standard.
Standard .22 rings won't work on your dove tails.
The rails on your gun are to small
There are split rings that will work but i can't recall the makers' name.
Go to Rimfire central and look in the High Standard forum, all the info you need is there!
