I'm picking up a CZ 527 Varmint .223 and am trying to figure out which scope would be best. I'm torn between Leupold 3-9x40 and Leupold 4-12x40.

Which one of these would be best for this rifle and caliber? Are there disadvantages to getting the 4-12x40?

I am also considering the Sightron SII 3-9.42. Any help would be appreciated.

I've got the 3-9 Leupold on my 223 527--seems fine to me.

My 527 shot three groups in a row in the 1/2" range (two under, one at .516) my first time out with it with the cheap wwb bulk ammo--that's good enough for me ;)

I'd go with the 4x14 because I find myself wishing for more magnification than my 3-9 on my AR.

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

I just picked up a CZ 527 in .223 a couple months back and had the same question to ponder.

I settled on the Bushnell 3200 in 5x15 which seemed to be a nice package for the $$$. I've been very happy with it so far :)

I just got a .223 a couple weeks ago and I got a CZ 452 a couple months ago. Both rifles have 4-12X40 AO scopes on them and I'm very satisfied. One is a Bushnell Trophy series and the other is a Simmons.

Excellent choice for a rifle. Mine started out with a VXII 3-9 and I upgraded to a Nikon buckmaster 4.5-14 mildox target. The Nikon was only 270 and works very nice for what I use it for. I've found that anything over 6x is too much for groundsquirrels under 200 yards if I want to see the impact. The buckmaster is probably about the same quality as a VX1 or 2, and the Monarch gold (that I have on my .270) is very impressive, but a lot more expensive than a buckmaster.

Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 x 40 side focus with the target dot reticle is what I put on mine and it is incredible. 1/8 in clicks, super clear glass and a really good warranty.

I bought my 527 to use as a calling gun ( I call very poorly, BTW ) I went with a staight 4X because it was about optimum for MY needs and I didn't want to upset the balance with a large variable. The rifle is a tackdriver with handloads. You have made a great choice!......Good Shooting....Essex

My choices would be:
Weaver V16 has semi target knobs good serviceable scope
Sightron SII 4.16x42 moving up
Loopy 4.5-14 with target knobs about as good as it gets

Another question...

How are the Leupold Rifleman series from Walmart? Are they junk or are they "good enough" for varmints and target shooting?

Should I save up and get the VX-II series or maybe the VX-III? For this particular rifle, does it really make a big difference?
