Hey gang! :)

Well I'm looking into getting one of my dream rifles soon: a Remington 700 Police 26" bbl in .308 Winchester.

Naturally, I need an optic for this thing though!

So... I'm not that well versed on rifle scopes. Most of the shooting I do is with iron sights on my other weapons. I do know the basics of scopes, but haven't much personal shooting time with them. I know the Remington 700 police is used by many police sharposhooters... and I've also heard that they generally are not shooting from very far compared to military snipers for instance.

So I am buying this gun mainly as a fun/recreational target shooting range gun. Also, I am wanting an optic to be what a real Law Enforcement sharpshooter would be using. What scopes do these professionals tend to use on there Remington 700Ps? I'd imagine not something with too much magnification since most shots won't be farther than 200 yards?

So yeah... basically what would be a good scope for a Remington 700P that is actually used by the various departments that issue this rifle? Also what would be a good set of rings for said scope?

I am not wanting to spend more than $600 but am willing to budge if need be.

Thanks guys! :D

I have not used a MK4 but I have several VX-R's & VX-3's in 4x14. The glass is incredible. My deer rifle has the VX-R with the Firefly and you'd have to see it to believe it

My theory on power is that you can always turn down to the low end, but you can never go past the maximum top end. Any time I'm target shooting, they're always cranked to the max. One of the VX3 4x14's is on my .22

Unlike the military, there is no standard issue anything for police departments. Pretty much every department makes their own decisions on what works best for their jurisdiction and what their budget can tolerate. While the Leupold Mark IV and better and the Nightforce scopes probably are the "standard" I imagine you will find a wide variation among police rifle optics. Your budget of $600 is about 1/2 of what you would need to get into the above scopes but there are some fine choices in your price range that will get you to a happy place for your stated purpose.

My suggestion would be that you look for a Mil-dot based reticle since learning how to properly use this reticle is fun and challenging in and of itself, not to mention it is a standard among snipers. I would strongly suggest the turret adjustments be set up in mils as well (some mil-dot scopes adjust in MOA increments which adds a calculation to the adjustment process).

I would also suggest that a First Focal Plane (FFP) reticle would be good to consider. This allows the mil-dots to be accurate regardless of zoom level. Unfortunately, a quick look for a decent scope with this feature only one (SS 3-9x42) fell in your budget and the rest were $800+.

For daylight range work I would be willing to sacrifice some optical quality (i.e. glass) and would not worry about objective size as much. It is all a compromise so this is where I would compromise for your stated purpose and budget.

The rest is really just how much you want to spend on quality (of both the glass and the adjustment mechanisms) and some various other features you may or may not care about.

For the ranges you are talking about, much magnification is really not necessary. Personally I would be happy with better glass and less magnification (4x-6x max) at those ranges but that is not very "sniper" like so I suppose you will likely want something a little higher. I would suggest you keep the low end of the magnification no greater than 4x as you may not enjoy not having the option for a wider field of view.

So here are a few suggestions in your price range (shop around, the links are just for ease of finding examples):

SS 3-9x42 (Mil-dot FFP) - This is really the one I would recommend for your purpose.

Vortex 2.5-10x44 (Mil-dot NOT FFP)

And slightly above your budget:

SS 3-15x42 (Mil-dot FFP)

Vortex 2.5-10x42 (Mil-dot FFP Illuminated reticle)

i'd guess the vast majority of LEO snipers are sporting Leupold Vx3 or mk4 scopes that are either 3-10x or 4-14x, just depending on how long ago they were purchased.

most likely in leupold rings.

the scopes are well built. the glass is adequate. they track well enough that LEO snipers won't notice the difference. of course, there are way better options these days. but if you have to have one, i'd look at the used market as there are probably hundreds available.

I wouldn't expect it to be a typical LEO scope, but I recently put a Vortex Viper PST FFP 6-24x50 on my 700 and I absolutely love it. The EBR-2C reticle is great as well.
