I mounted a Nikon Monarch 4x16x42 on my Browning X Bolt in 30-06 using this setup http://www.dnzproducts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66_56&products_id=394 If the scope was slipping each time the gun was fired, which way would the scope slide inside the rings forward or rearward. I think I had a slight bit of oil on the scope when I mounted it don't ask me how. Anyway, what can I use to remove all traces of oil from my scope and rings so I can re mount it. I have a little Gun Scrubber synthetic safe type with the grey cap but, is this too strong for the scope or ring finish. sure would appreciate all advice about what I could use instead. Thanks! :)

Scopes s;lip forward under recoil.

The gun goes back, and the scope tries to stay where it was.

Rubbing alcohol or Zippo type lighter fluid is great for degreasing things without harming them.

Yep, that's what I thought I noticed my neck seemed to be getting shorter and had to keep leaning forward more and more. :D Does it matter what percent alcohol I use I have some cheap stuff?

The only difference is the water content. You have 70%- 99% rubbing alcohol. The remainder is usually water. The only impact it should have is the time it takes to dry on the metal. Now wood... that is a different story.

I tested gun scrubber (synthetic safe) on an old cheap scope after putting a small bit of oil on it and it worked great! so I used it when I remounted the Nikon. Now, to find a 7/64" bit to fit my Fat Wrench the rings call for 22-25"lbs of torque. Also, I'm going to mark the location of the rings before shooting with a pencil this time. :)
