Bought this DeSantis Desperado holster and belt not long after I bought my Beretta Stampede. A very well made rig that at the time didn't set me back all that much. Just looked at their current catalog and definitely the prices have gone up a bit (like everything else), but I still think it's a decent buy for the money.

Howdy

Does that rig get heavy with all those bullets in it?

I bought my 'Duke' rig when I first started in CAS. It has 25 belt loops. I discovered right away that 25 extra 250 grain 45 Colt cartridges stuffed into the belt loops made the rig pretty uncomfortable to wear all day. These days, in addition to one 45-70 in the middle "John Wayne style", eight 12 gauge shells, and a few 44-40s for rifle reloads, that is all the weight I want to carry all day. Most of the loops on the belt are empty.

If I ever buy another rig, I doubt I will have any loops on it at all.

No, not at all. If remember correctly I think there are only 20 belt loops. Still have to get a .45-70 cartridge so I can copy the Duke's practice which I believe he picked up on from some of the cowboys who worked in the movies as extras, stuntmen, or as wranglers.

Like your rig too!

Supposedly, as you were reaching around to find shell to fill your sixshooter or carbine, you would encounter the larger cartridge and realize you only had “x” shells left.

Many of the photos from the era show cowboys wearing cartridge belts but two things are missing. First, large rifle cartridge and second, the belt buckle. Seems many wore them with the buckle behind or to the side so the cartridges were readily available to the hand.

I can tell you from experience that cowboys probably didn't have the single 45-70 in the belt.

Reason #1: they weren't getting in gun fights and such (on purpose)
Reason #2: the cantle on the saddle would just push it out and you lose it.

Cavalry dudes rode McClellan saddles. very little actual saddle going on there. low cantle.

but then, I am the skinniest dude on the planet with no backside to speak of so maybe they did without trouble...

ETA: for reference, this is a McClellan Saddle.
It has a higher cantle than i remember, but still:

No argument from me, just iterating what was told me about why John Wayne wore his belt with the 45-70 in it.

Here is one of the photos I mentioned in my post, not cowboys and I probably should not have used that term. These boys are Texas Rangers.

Cowboys were usually too poor to own a revolver. Besides most outfits had rules prohibiting them, (early gun control?).

Is that your McClellan?

And not a snowflake among them....

I guess low rise pants hadn't hit the fashion scene yet.

All high waisted and without belt loops.

And much narrower brims than I prefer!
