well, since nobody else chimed in, any magnification above 3-4 or so and a scout scope gets real hard to hold on target. I have looked through the leatherwood, and it looked ok. It wasn't an exhaustive test, just a guy had one in the gun shot getting mounted and let me look through it.
You might consider experimenting with a low cost scout scope and see if you like it before you plunk down real money. the ncstar pistolero scopes have a pretty good reputation over on marlinowners, and I know a lot of people mount them on mosins. I looked through the 2.5x30 version at the range one day, and it was pretty good for $40 glass. came with rings too.
With nicer scopes though, I would buy the burris scout over the leupold. I seem to recall that it is smaller, slighter in weight, more field of view, costs less, and when you google leupold vs burris scout, most of the posts say the burris is preferred. Weaver makes a 4x scout that is kind of intrigueing, but I keep getting scared off by the 4x. Seems too strong. If it was 2.5 or 3x I would be all over it.
