well, since nobody else chimed in, any magnification above 3-4 or so and a scout scope gets real hard to hold on target. I have looked through the leatherwood, and it looked ok. It wasn't an exhaustive test, just a guy had one in the gun shot getting mounted and let me look through it.

You might consider experimenting with a low cost scout scope and see if you like it before you plunk down real money. the ncstar pistolero scopes have a pretty good reputation over on marlinowners, and I know a lot of people mount them on mosins. I looked through the 2.5x30 version at the range one day, and it was pretty good for $40 glass. came with rings too.

With nicer scopes though, I would buy the burris scout over the leupold. I seem to recall that it is smaller, slighter in weight, more field of view, costs less, and when you google leupold vs burris scout, most of the posts say the burris is preferred. Weaver makes a 4x scout that is kind of intrigueing, but I keep getting scared off by the 4x. Seems too strong. If it was 2.5 or 3x I would be all over it.

I have the Weaver 4x on my Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle and I love it. I'm usually a glass snob, but this scope is really good and very reasonable. Good luck.

you don't find that 4x is a little high powered for a scout? I'm torn because I like the price of the weaver, and I think 2x needs a little more, but 4 just seems high.

Hello spence,

You may also want to take a look at the Burris Scout scope as well. It has a 2.75x magnification and a 20mm objective lens. The seller for me on this one would be the the heavy plex reticle that it has, which might be a bit easier to see when looking through your scope from a foot away. If you'd like to check it out, here's a link to it: http://www.opticsplanet.com/burris-2-75x-heavy-plex-mat-scout-scopes.html. Let me know if you have any questions on this model or any others and I'd be glad to help!

I have the Leupold and love it. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the others, so I can't give you a fair comparison.

I have both of those scopes. I have leupold scouts on A Ruger scout and A Marlin 1895 GS. The Leatherwood is on A marlin 336 30-30. I like them both. The higher magnification of the leatherwood is good for plinking and target fun. Crank it back for hunting. The leupolds are great but the leatherwood is A good scope for the money.
Would be A good scope to start with to see how you like the scout set up.

I'm not a glass guy. I have the Leupold 2.5x on my GSR with their QD rings so I can use the irons if needed. The scope comes off when I'm cleaning and I have no problems with it losing zero. I compared it to the Leupold 4x at Cabelas on one of their GSR's. The higher magnification was too much and hard to steady when aiming off hand. Also, I can shoot with both eyes open using the 2.5x, not so much with the 4x.

I haven't tried any of the other scopes, as none were available for me to handle in person. I paid the premium because I didn't want to risk buying junk for a little less and being stuck with it.

I use this exact scout scope on my 30-30 lever action. I've been very happy with it. This rifle and scope combo goes hunting and has been to quite a few rifle training classes.

Pretty much why Leupold is my default brand. It is a very good scope. Is it the best? I have no idea. I have found that elusive search for the best just leads to frustration.

Love my Burris scout! I have it on a 10/22 for rabbit/small game. Started with the $40 NCStar scout and upgraded after a while. The Burris is a huge improvement.

I own a Burris and two Leupolds. I have two Leupys for a reason. I prefer them. It WAS however the first forward mount fullsize scope I owned. I started years ago with a 7/8 cheapie scope on a Springfield single shot 22. It had an excessive eye relief but worked really well. When I read of the scout concept in 66 from Col. Cooper I knew it to be true. Either the Leupold or the Burris are good. I don't care for Hilux or other cheaper glass.
