After having shoulder surgery this year I decided I needed a light-recoil 20ga auto-loader for upland season (or at least that is the excuse I told the wife ;) )

Hitting pawn shops and used stores I found a nice, clean and functional example of a Sears/Ted Williams/High Standard mod 75 gas-operated semi that is rust free, nice clean bluing with only minor handling wear for a tiny song and dance ($100). Poly choke, vent rib, dual bead, clear coat nice and solid on the wood.

Found an old PDF online with take-down and operating instructions. It's disassembled and soaking in Hoppes right now as the action is fairly gunked up with very old and thick oil/grease, hoping is cleans up nice and smooth.

What I know, it takes 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells (stamped on barrel and listed in book). What is not clear, as in they didn't exsist in the late 60's is steel/non-toxic loads. I will be targeting upland birds but I do frequent a non-toxic only area for pheasant and quail. I was wondering if anyone had any input/cautions. Anyone with expirience as to what brand/flavors of shot shells may be most reliable in this action?

Most people will tell you that steel is not good for a Poly-choke. They are right for the most part. I wouldn't worry too much about it using #4 or smaller shot with the choke set at mod or more open. As far as reliability, well lets just say High Standard made some darn good pump guns. I would think most 1oz or heavier lead loads should work OK.
