I offered to clean my boss's Sears Model 5 (Winchester 150 rebrand) and proceeded to disassemble it. When I removed the action, the recoil plate (original style) fell out. I'd never worked on a lever gun before so it took a while to figure out where it went. However, as soon as I reassembled the rifle I wasn't able to fully cycle the action. Seems that the recoil plate moved and prevented full movement. I cannot figure out how to reinstall the plate so that it won't move. For that matter, I don't understand why a lever gun would need a recoil plate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The recoil (locking) plate fits into a groove in the front of the bolt and is pushed up into a recess in the top of the receiver by the lever. It's been a while since I have had one apart, but I think there is a pin or something similar to hold the locking plate in place.

I finally got the part where it belongs! There'a video on YT that shows it, but you can't blink or you will miss it. The recoil plate sits on a ledge at the back of the receiver and is held in place by the butt stock bolt. I tried it there before, but I think I tightened up the bolt too much and advanced the nut so that the bolt wouldn't go deep enough. I corrected that and now the plate is held firmly in place. Don't really understand it's purpose, but I'm not the designer and it is not my rifle, so in it goes.
