seating 55gr sp?

I was having issues with a savage axis 223rem leaving a ring around 55gr v max and several other issues. savage said they did something to the chamber and I should be good. well I'm a little better with the v max, book states 2.250 and before to not get the ring/cut I would have to seat 2.225-2.227ish. now I can seat them all the way to 2.233 without issues.

I just made a dummy round for 55gr SP and book calls for 2.220 which is at the cannelure. I seated a little deeper and to get a clear cycling bolt I have to be at 2.170-2.173.

my concern is the v max is way longer than the sp and gives me a lot more seating depth. looking at the sp I'm right on the edge where it goes to taper into the point and that's with a very slight cut/ring on the bullet. I'm a little scared to seat them any deeper.

any thoughts or help is appreciated.

Are you looking at a rifling contact ring on the bullet?

Or a seating stem ring on the bullet???

rifling. if they are too long I get a cut on the ogive area and the bolt wont open and when it does the rounds stick into the lans. throat was so short that certain factory ammo would do the same thing. I had a thread with pics about it a month or so ago. savage said they fixed it and they did to a point.

I'm just concerned with the sp bullets being so short and not being able to seat all the way. just wondering how far from the taper its safe to seat.

If I read this correctly (Taper of the bullet), you can seat the bullets as deep as you have full diameter. Where it starts to curve in, the ogive, needs to be out of the case.

I wasn't sure how close I was allowed to be. its super close but still on the meat of the bullet.

What is important is where the ogive contacts the rifling. You may be able to seat the V-Max longer and not hit the rifling. You'll just have to check and see.

I have one AR with a Min Spec 223R chamber. Of this gun I have found several book OAL that puts me into the lands. I determine my OAL with every bullet style I have, even lot changes. With these I have to reduce my OAL, I normally start at 0.020-0.030" off the lands when I work up my load. Once you get to around 0.020" your pressure curves starts going up with the same charge. So do workup up your loads don't take for granted whats published will be fine.

I got the v max set its the Sp I'm having concerns with. book for v max is 2.250 and its longer so I have more room to seat or don't seat. v max doesn't touch rifling at 2.235.

the 55gr hornady jacketed SP the book says 2.220 and must be seated almost to the taper or ogive to chamber in my rifle.

When I replaced the barrel for my .223 Rem 700 I specified that I wanted the leade as short as possible so I could seat shorter bullets on the lands, but this was a 12" twist for use with softer bullets. Unless your twist rate supports heavier (longer) bullets that need more room to seat safely, or you're using hard bullets that need a running start (not vmax) I wouldn't ream out the throat indiscriminately. IMO there's no substitute for accuracy and a short leade is well worth having.
