I’ve been shooting black powder about two years now and enjoying the sport. With summer approaching, wearing a long coat to conceal a 7.5”-8” barrel is getting impractical and I started thinking about how sleek it would be to turn an 1851 into a cut down 1861 or shorten an 1860 with a simple barrel swap. Does anyone know if Uberti ever manufactured the 1861 in .36 with a 5.5” barrel? If not that one, a 5.5” 1860 barrel would also do fine. My Google fu was weak. I couldn’t find any spare barrels of this description through VTI, Dixie, or elsewhere. I may need to just buy a spare full length barrel and hacksaw, learn to dovetail a sight, and try my hand at making my own, but I thought I’d ask here first.

A 5 inch is listed for a ‘51.

Hello gtrgy888,

You will also need a Loading Lever Assy.
I cut down an 1851 Pietta in 44 cal. to 5".
I cut it down on a band saw & squared it up in a mill.
But because it was on a Cartridge Conversion, I didn't need the loading lever.
If you cut one for Percussion use, you will need to add the Barrel Loading Lever Stud also.
Of course you could use the one off the cut off, but you will need to dovetail it in the barrel.

At present, only 7.5" Uberti belt frame barrels are listed on EBAY:

This one looks shorter but it may just be the photo angle and it does not specify:

Here is a 5.5 Pocket:

You could set up a search for "Sporting Goods/Hunting/Gun Parts/Uberti Barrel" and run it occasionally!
Good Luck
