I guess the title says it all.

I gotta get these fugly and uncomfortable black plastic panels off my pistol.

What do you guys suggest for a new parkerized Gov't .45?

I don't much care if there is a Colt Pony on 'em, or some other brand logo. I won't be photographing this sidearm to brag to y'all about. I just like wood vs. plastic.

I've looked at birdseye maple, smooth walnut, rubber, Hogue exotic wood, stag, faux pearl and many others. This is one gun I won't be too gentle with. So I don't even care it they come used.

Would these be okay on a parkerized SA pistol? Something else I'm missing here? I'm open to suggestions.

almost forgot to mention....

I think I would most like to have some version of double-diamond panels.

What would you suggest for under $50 ?

Mr. Nitesite . . . . . .

I do not own a 1911 ( although a Colt or Dan Wesson is in my future ). But I do own( and have owned ) many CZ's. Lemme offer you one of the greater secrets of 1911 ownership (as well as CZ):

You, Sir, will NOT regret throwing this true gentleman an e-mail about how he can dress your 1911 like a well tailored suit!

Esmerelda makes some of the finest I've seen, rejecting 95% of the wood and using only the top 5% of Cocobolo. Most are in the $100 price range, that's a little more than you wanted to spend. I don't think you'd regret getting a pair of these.

I have had good luck on Ebay getting some nice grips for 35 to 50 bucks.
just search for 1911 grips. I may have an extra pair around. I'll look and email you pics later tonight or early am Sunday.

Thanks, all of you for lending your input. EVERYONE has contributed a great suggestion.

I do appreciate those members who think a parkerized Mil-Spec Springer needs some really dressy panels. But I am more concerned with just getting these ugly plastic panels off in favor of some 'practically priced' wood.

Function and reliability of my pistol is my first priority, and my Springer has proved that "in spades". It's not had any malf shooting 230-gr ball or 230-gr Gold Dots (perhaps the good magazines have helped).

The wood grips it will wear will suffer occasional light dings and nicks and scrapes. Hey, that's the way it goes. It's gonna be a ranch/farming/truck gun sometimes, but will probably not see a gunsafe ever!

I think I would like something light colored or reddish. The very fanciest I might go with would be some faux ivory, but I really want to try smooth wood.

Again... Thanks Everybody!

here are the grips I have. They are smooth. If you want them pm with an address and I will put them in the mail tommorrow. All I ask is that if you don't use them send them back or find a good homefor them.

The Milspecs I've seen lately have a wood grip with a raised portion midway down with WWII (as I recall) embossed on them. I thought it looked a little strange. I usually try to keep Milspecs sorta original lookin. You can find DD or full checked non exexotic wood for $20. I take the grips and strip them, and then stain them, making them look worn. I know so what.....

Thank you everyone

As I said previously, I appreciate all of you who took the time to respond with ideas.

I have entered into an arrangement with silent one **for some grips, and I am quite sure I will be immensely pleased.

**Great guy, BTW!

Greeting's And Welcome Aboard nitesite -

Let me say that you have certainly come aboard a very good
(and active) website. Members here at both very courteous
and knowledgeable in firearms discussions. I have made lots
of friends here; and certainly hope you can do the same. In
fact, you've already found one of my very dear friends and
forum member, in the silent one.

Not only is he a great gentleman, personal friend, and forum
member; but also a 1911 expert. I turn to him for all my advice
on any 1911 shoot'in iron. My G.I. WW-II Mil Spec Springer
wears a set of his custom "bloodswood" grips. They are truly
magnificent; look and fit nicely.

Again. welcome aboard and if I can be of help don't hesitate
to call [email protected]

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

Ala Dan~~

Thanks much for the kind welcome. You're the first that I recall to exend such!

silent one has already told me about you in PMs we have shared. He sure is some kinda guy, isn't he? That is very evident to me already.

He mentioned that you and I share some life experiences in common. Yep, I'd sure be honored to have you lend your knowledge and expertise to this most humble shooter.

I've spent some time over at the Smith-WessonForum and I have always followed your contributions closely. You are on my list of respected contributors there! Alas, there has been an exodus of esteemed members there in the past months, lowriderfxr being the latest. I lament their leaving. I have always endeavored to be a respectful member there and hope that I have developed some respect there (if only for my gentlemanly conduct, not my ability to contribute insightful information or great pictures).

With luck, I will become respected here, if for nothing more than my conduct and decorum.

Ala Dan, and nitesite,

Thank you both for the kind words. I like to look upon THR as a big family, and we help each other whenever possible. I know I have been helped by some fantastically knowledgeable members here. Ala Dan has helped me in the handloading area, along with other insightful information. His knowledge of Sig weapons, is second to none. He has also become a close personal friend. 1911 Tuner is the true expert, when it comes to any variation of the venerable 1911 .45 cal weapon. The man is an encyclopedia of knowledge, who is in my estimation without peer, and also a good friend. There are many other masters of the firearm to be found on THR, but these gentlemen stand out in my mind. One other esteemed member who shares his wealth of knowledge here, is old fuff. He has forgotten more, than most of us will ever know about any type of firearm.

Let me also welcome you to THR. I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do. It's not only a place to learn, but also a place to share knowledge, and friendship, with others.

Before I close down this thread...

Can I get an Amen for the great photograph I first attached?

Found it on eBay.

A professional advertising agency layout photographed nicely with a pretty good set of walnut panels. Nice job, huh?

See you guys later on The High Road..... Next post asks the question of who believes a cartridge that's been thru the washer and dryer twice will actually fire!

Listen to silent one. If anyone knows about wood and 1911 grips it is him. I have a set that he made out of bloodwood and they are simply a work of art.
