I've not been around shotguns since I was a teen-maybe 25-30 years ago.The only shotgun I have left is my dad's old humpback belgium browning and really don;t want to use.

What are some good semi's available now that aren't outrageous? It would be used for dove's,maybe deer. Thanks, Joe

I like the Remington Spartan 453. Don't own one, but I've heavily researched it and sounds like a fantastic gun for multiple uses, 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" compatible. I'd wanna swing it and put it to the shoulder before making a decision, though. The 1100 ain't a bad gun. The Winchester SX is a great gun.

Me, I have a Winchester 1400 that shoots 2 3/4" that is fantastic, reliable, fits me great right out of the box. But, it's no longer made. I've been thinking of getting a auto strictly for waterfowling and looking at the Mossberg 935. However, the 935 chambers 3" or 3.5" only. I do believe they have a model that shoots 2 3/4 and 3", though. I've heard good things about it and it has a tang safety which I like since I'm a south paw shooter.

If you find a Winchester 1400 used at a gun show or something, you could get it REAL affordably and I can tell you that one is a good gun. I've had mine about 20 years and it's fired everything from light dove loads to heavy steel waterfowl loads. It's killed a LOT of winged critters in its 20 years.

Another vote for the Benelli. I have a 10.5 ich M1 Super 90 that runs and runs. Plus they are a snap to clean. No dirty gas system.

Saiga. No if ands or buts about it.

Well, since he mentioned a Auto 5 and dove hunting, I figured he wasn't talkin' tacticool, but hunting shotgun. If you choked a Saiga, I guess you could dove hunt with it so long as it had the required 3 round total capacity, but then I suppose you COULD use a knife in a gun fight.

I have a buddy with a super 90 and he loves it. But, it set him back something the near side of a grand. Ain't really what I'd wanna subject to duck hunting, but it sure is a good shootin' gun, can't deny that! I've never seen that gun hicup.

Find a nice used Remington 1100 for about $400. They're great guns, they're reliable, and they're durable.

Not to offend anyone, because I don't personally have any experience with one, but can someone please tell me why the Benelli SBE's are $1300+???? I have no doubt that they are reliable, but just what makes them so special??? Just asking......

If you don't know what Kalashnikov refering to, Saiga refers to the Saiga series of shotguns. They are based on the Kalashnikov (AK) pattern, and are imported from Russia.

The Saiga is a semi-auto fed by a detachable box magazine. It is available in 12, 20, and .410 gauge chamberings and can be had in various barrel lengths, ranging from a short, defensive length to hunting lengths. The gun comes in a "sporter" configuration, meaning it does not have a pistol grip like a normal AK, although it can be converted quite easily.

Magazines are available in 5 and 10 round capacities, and a 19 round drum is scheduled for release soon. The Siaga is about the only detachable magazine shotgun available that is not classified as a "destructive device" (yet).

Price is about $450-$500 new.

Illegal for migratory birds...ie doves. They don't offer a 2 round magazine? Could you block one, restrict a 5 rounder to 2 rounds? How does it balance, swing? Can you get it with a bead sight or also with a vent rib?

Nah, there are more appropriate guns for this use IMHO and you can get a used Winchester 1400 for under 300 bucks. Fantastic gun, too, for hunting. It will only hold 3 rounds total, though, not very tacticool. But, in my hands, drop and comb, length of pull are perfect and the gun balances and swings like a dove killin' machine should.

I appreciate the suggestions.I like the benellis,but I don't know I would need a 1000.00 shotgun.Anybody know anything about the stoegers?

I know a guy that has a winchester 1400 for 275.00.It's been shot a good bit,but is in good shape.

The saigas look like they would be fun,but I don't know how they would be on the hunting end.

The money issue interests me a bit. It may be just because a lot more people in the states have guns that makes spending the money harder, somehow. Or that perhaps its not such an important thing ?

I spent £809 on my Benelli, at current exchange rates I beleive that's about $1600  Doesnt bother me though, I wanted a good gun , so I bought one :)

Another vote for the Benelli SBE II I found a screaming deal on one at a local Pawn Shop and couldn't be happier.

Remington 11-87 or Mossberg 930 comes closest to your goal.

Reletavely cheap, reliable, nice looking, and an extra deer barrel with rifling and cantilever scope mount won't require a bank loan.

And unlike many of the no-name imports, both the companies, and 11-87 / 930's will likely still be around way down the road if you do ever need parts & service.

IMO: The Saega AK-47 "shotgun" is not suitable for dove hunting at all.

The Benelli is expensive its a lifetime shotgun one that you will one day pass on to your kids with proper care.

The Winchester X2 is a good gun but also is a little pricey

The Remington 1100 has been in production since 1963 millions have been built and they turn up used at fairly good prices from time to time. Check any used one out thoroughly especially the O rings (easily replaced) as after long use these can need to be replaced.

The 11/87 is also a good Remington auto loader

Remington no longer makes the 1100 as a field grade combo bird / deer gun.
It seems to be aimed strictly at the clay target crowd now.

The 11-87 is the field gun with all sorts of hunting barrel options now.
