I have a Plainsman 865, .22 cal. Where is the serial number located? Can't find it anywhere visable. Do you have to take it apart to find it?

If it was made before 1968 a serial number was not required to be stamped on a gun. If a serial number isn't visible on the receiver this may be the issue.

H&R Plainsman 865. Quick search turns up ads from 1949.

A lot of utility grade .22 rifles and shotguns were made without serial numbers, until the 1968 Gun Control Act made serial numbers madatory on all guns made after the act was passed.

It was definitely made prior to 1968. It was from an uncle who had left it in a corner for many years prior to me getting it sometime in 1968. I want to put a cheap scope on it. the only screws on top are the two that hold the rear sight.
