Has anyone out there heard of a Sheridan Knockabout. It was a small, single shot .22 pistol, low quality. I think they were made in the 70's as kind of a tackle-box gun. I'd like to find one to have a completely reliable pistol to plink with on hikes. It's kind of a novelty gun to me. Can you recommend any other pistols like it?

Thanks,
HB

Today, they're more collectible oddities than anything else, and if you want something reliable, you may as well get a DA revolver like a S&W 17, or even a Ruger Mk II. The "Knocabout" was made mainly from stampings riveted together. There were a few other similar pistols offered around the same time, but these were likewise short-lived items that are today more collectible simply because they're odd. Off-hand, I can think of the Wamo Powermaster, a single-shot .22 that automatically ejects its empties (and looks more like an air pistol than anything else).

I have a Knocabout and it is OK, and certanly about as "non-threatening" as a handgun can be, but I would go with the revolver idea.

The S&W Model 17 (K-22) would be very nice, but a bit big and definitely for holster carry. The .22/32 Kit Gun would be OK, also. Then there is the Ruger Single Six (also holster carry) and the little Bearcat, either of which would be nice. You can get the Single Six convertible with a .22 Magnum cylinder, which would give more power if needed.

A 50s early 60s collectors item. Actually durable enough and accurate, but with a terrible trigger! Here's a bad picture of mine:

A really good hiking gun is a S&W "Kit" gun which is any of their old or new small J frame .22RF revolvers with a 2 to 4 inch barrel. For infrequent use a .22 mag is a little stronger and a lot louder. In Semi Autos the little Walther or the Sig misquito would do if you can't find a nice old Beretta 70 series which IMHO, are the best!

There was a 7/8 scale .22 caliber single shot replica of the Colt 1860 Army produced around the time of the Civil War centenial, beautiful little gun. Probably a costly collectors item if you could find one.

Knocabouts are around.

I collect U.S. made single-shot .22rf handguns and rifles. I have the Knocabout (correct spelling); a WAMO Powermaster; and an S-M Sporter - all from about the same postwar (WW II) era.

The S-M is too rare and too fragile to even consider using it. I do not shoot any of my collectibles. Afraid of devaluing them.

Below are some informative pics for you to check out. Top photo is S-M; next is 1953 S-M ad; next is Sheridan Knocabout; bottom is WAMO Powermaster.
Like these guys have said, seriously consider a more current wheelie.
