I see where Southern Ohio Guns (http://www.southernohiogun.com/) has the Polish SHG-P64 in 9X18 pretty cheap. I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with them? I looked online and the ammo seems to be readily avalaible. If i did get one it would just be someting to plink with or have for my collection not as a real serious defense weapon. Anyway any info. anyone has about them would be appreciated.

My P64 is a great shooter and has proven 100% reliable through around 500 rounds so far. I sometimes carry mine IWB with either Corbon PowRBall or Hornady XTP. The gun is well balanced, well built and has a lot of features for its size. Ie.. Chrome line barrel, loaded chamber indicator, decocker, safety, last round lock-open. The stock main spring is ridiculously stiff and will NEED to be changed to shoot it. I ordered mine from Wolf and have been pleased with the transformation. SA is uber light and crisp as-is though.

Mine's my everyday carry in a DeSantis SuperFly in my right front pocket. As noted, with the Wolff spring change it's a very viable choice as a pocket pistol. Very accurate, reasonable power, inexpensive and easily available ammo, and a nice size. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you get it.

The gun is really accurate, but I personally wouldn't count on it. I mean, it's 99+% reliable, in terms of feeding and ejection. But the design seems prone to parts failure (DA sear notch and trigger return spring, in particular). And the trigger is pretty bad, in both DA and SA. This is the worst design of the 9x18 milsurp pistols, by far, and the price reflects this.

IMO, this gun is not a great deal. It's just ok. I'd rather pay twice as much for any of the other 9x18's. I paid $150 for mine, and I regret it; only because I already have a PA-63 that does everything better in a marginally larger package. I guess if you have need for this size/caliber gun and wanna be cheap about it, this might be the one for you. It's purdy and has a nice finish. And yet, I'd trade mine for a Hi-Point.

Interesting. Could you offer some potential reliability/failure specifics? I haven't seen or heard of any major failures on the P64 Resource Forum. The one thing that I have seen is a few instances of an overhardened safety cylinder cracking, which is only a major issue on these guns due to the complete lack of replacement parts. What types of failures have you seen or experienced?

My example broke a trigger return spring. 2 other guys on the forum had a problem where the DA sear notch was not engaging. In DA, the hammer slipped off way too early, resulting in light strikes. If you look at it, it's holding on by the skin of its teeth, and it's not hard to imagine that the part may wear out a couple thousandths over time. A design that relies on a few thou's to operate might be considered sketchy.

Just take off the right grip panel and watch as you pull the trigger. When I saw the insides, my first impression was that the gun was suck. I had to suppress my internal monologue from making a polish joke. Then the gun broke. The gun is forever tainted to me, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who will rely on it and have no issues.

*Mine also will drop the hammer completely out of battery.

Sorry, when I originally quoted you your post was much shorter. I typed it on my phone so I didn't see that you had already edited your post. Thanks for elabortating on your experiences though. My first P64 was pretty beat up and well worn in. It was an accurate gun and shot reliably. I ended up giving it to a close friend that had been mugged. I replaced it with the one pictured above and it was most assuredly never issued. It is mostly collection type gun but I do carry it periodically. I like the snap holster because I can toss it in my gym bag or backpack and its secure.

No problems. To be honest, I also broke a trigger return spring in my PA63. I dry fire my guns a lot, and these guns have old springs.

I would definitely feel fine to carry mine, so long as I kept it clean and didn't dry fire it too often - IF I didn't already have other options that I'm more confident in.

I think the only real problem with the P64 over the the milsurp guns is that the old springs and parts cannot be replaced if they do fail. If parts become available I think the gun's potential would increase drastically.

I have two, one of the older round hammers and one with the triangle. I used mine to qualify for my CCW. I still carry them once in a while but they enjoy more range time than anything. p64resource.com has lots of info on them.

Um, the springs are available new from wolf, as for parts, they are around if you look.

The only springs Wolff offers for the P64 are recoil and main spring replacements. Norm Sutton makes trigger return and slide stop springs for them as well. As for parts, if you see any they are most likely from a gun being parted out because something on it borked. The safety cylinder seems to be the most common and one user recently found that his hammer strut was broken and had to tig weld it to fix it because there are none to be had anywhere in the US. Try finding a firing pin or any of the other trigger group parts and you will come up empty.

The P64 is sweet, dead accurate, and 100% reliable. Ammo is $9.99/50 at Academy here. I got mine at J&G and am probably going to get one at Southern Ohio once my C&R comes in. The recent addition of them to their list seemed to put a huge spike in their popularity. J&G haven't had them since that day.

RD, that is why I keep an eye out for a parts gun, hate to say it, but I have been know to buy 3 of a gun, so i know I will always have 2

Another P-64 fan here. Very sturdy pistols, sized right for concealed carry. Due to the very real problem of parts unavailability mine get shot sparingly. Many P-64 owners like the Wolff replacement springs. I personally prefer the heavy DA trigger and the very light SA that I get with the stock springs.

If there's an Achilles heel it's the trigger return spring, as someone already noted. The spring in the later (triangular hammer) model is stronger.

I recently received mine and in the couple weeks that I've had it, I've put around 6 boxes through it, about half of it being SilverBear 94gr JHPs. I've heard where people complain that the DA trigger is comically heavy and I completely agree with that.
However, the SA is way light and allows for some very accurate shooting. I would say the SA trigger is around 3 pounds.
I will also say that my strong hand thumb knuckle was chewed to the point of calling it quits after 150 rounds. Though it's surprisingly accurate, especially for it's size, it's not fun to shoot after the first box or two unless you've brought shooting gloves.

I probably wouldn't carry mine since it's a bit too large for pocket carry and if I'm going to belt carry, the K9 is my standard carry pistol, but I can't see why anyone wouldn't carry this if it's proven reliable for them.

They're cute, fun, functional and best of all C&R eligible and inexpensive.

My '76 is capable of usable accuracy at 15 yards in single action.

About the best-looking C&R I've received

I am an un-abashed fan of the P64. Great gun for the money. Do the spring mod. As for parts failures, sure they can happen as they can with any gun. The issue with certain parts will be finding spares. My P64 has been extremely reliable and very accurate. The only ding I have against it (even after the spring job) is the blister it rubs on the web of my hand after about 50-75 rounds. It is my carry gun when my dress won't comfortably allow carry of my 1911. Its my go-to gun when I go out to exercise because of its small size and ease of concealability.
