Shipping an AR-15 upper

Can I ship an AR-15 upper through USPS? It is less expensive than UPS.

An upper is not a firearm. Ship however you want.

You can ship the lower or whole rifle USPS if you want.

That said USPS tracking and insurance are expensive and very poor quality while parcel post can be extremely slow-I have had stuff take 16 days from FL to CA while UPS was running about 1/3 of that.

Personally I would send it UPS ground if in the lower 48 and priority mail to HI or AK, I would avoid parcel post at all costs.

The OP did not specify to whom, and where, he is sending the rifle parts. He can mail a rifle to a FFL but not to another unlicensed individual.

There are some pretty specific rules for shipping FIREARMS.

They (almost universally) don't apply to an upper receiver.

He was asking about an AR upper. That is a PART and can be shipped to anybody anywhere by any method. Only problem might be some goofy local ordinance against evil black rifles or parts but I don't know of any offhand.

It is definitely NOT a rifle or anything that would cause any special shipping method or have any laws regulating how or where it could be shipped.

As I said, he can mail it to just about anyone, just about anywhere. It isn't a firearm.

(Now, if it WAS a complete firearm, he could mail it to a non-licensee in his own state, but it isn't. If a fish had legs it wouldn't need all that water to hold itself up.)

The above (bolded) is partially correct, and can lead to confusion.

A person can legally mail a rifle/shotgun to a same-state resident (that would be the unlicensed individual), if their state/local laws allow.

A person can always mail a rifle/shotgun to any FFL holder anywhere.


The AR15 upper isn't legally a firearm, so you can mail it to anyone you like.
