had a great range day today. brought 4 guns super redhawk, xdm 9mm, les. baer monolith heavyweight and a smith and wesson 586.

set up my steel targets 10 inch bullseye gong at 25 yrds, 6 inch at 50 yards and hung a golf ball from the 25 yrd frame .

first up xdm and nailed the 6 inch gong the first shot. It was going to be a good day. also had a gopro on recording but then missed 3 shots in a row before resuming hits on it.

tried the golf ball with the 1911 and 200 gr lswc with vvn320. hit the target on the second try looping the paracord around the support. even more fun was that the gopro was on. hit it several more times over the course of the session. once on the first try.(that baer is an accurate gun.) i had just brought that prewired golfball as an afterthought. it's for my 223 boltgun. also had a great time banging on the gongs with all four guns. even hit the 225 yrd gong with the 44 mag rested and single action but it did use up 8 xtp rounds.
this was going to be great footage.

turns out small targets even painted orange don't show up well at 25 or 50 yrds. another factor was setting the resolution lower but with a higher frame rate. after zooming in the picture was worse.

had a good shooting day but looking at the video was a complete let down.

how close are all those first person youtube videos(most of which were probably taken on gopros) that I've admired for so long where the targets were so clearly seen?

below is a pic of the golf ball. it's like the equivalent of those souvenir shirts that says... my grandfather went to so and so place and all i got was this lousy t shirt.

golfing is fun! a regular video camera would probably work better for the long-range footage. the xtp bullet is, imo, the best long-range jacketed bullet on the market.

what happened to the 586? that is one of the best long-range handguns out there.

i did well with it also at 25 and 50 yrds but it's only 4 inches and i like a longer sight radius so i didnt try for 225 yrds. i would just be wasting ammo and i just brought plated swc and lead swc.. i notice I'm not as consistent with it as my gp100( didnt bring it). it's those nice wood grips. it moves in my hand slightly between shots. to shoot it more consistently i have to put uglier rubbber grips on it but still deciding on which one. after i had replaced the rebound trigger spring and keeping the dame hammer spring it has the sweetest trigger.

that xtp is great. i never would have tried that bullet for the far gongs till one of the range regulars asked me to try and compared to lswc 240 gr it was more predictable. i needed to shoot several jacketed thru the SRH anyway to clear the leading so it wasnt a total waste.

a friend of mine was shooting his 6.5 inch vaquero at a 2 liter bottle a quarter mile (440 yards) away. the load was 140 grain xtps @ 1100 fps. he fired three or four cylinders full and came within six inches of the bottle three times.

your gun will shoot way out there.

will try aa 9 and 158 xtp load i saw in handloader magazine and try longer range with the 357 next time.

Shooting small… I read that the Olympic air rifle competition (women's event won by a US teen) involved taking out a 1mm dot with a .177 caliber bullet – at 10m, unsupported, iron sights.
