I took my 4 inch 686 and my 6 inch Pre model 28 out this afternoon briefly to try out some ammo I had loaded using a new bullet. Usually I use Xtreme plated bullets but decided to try some RMR 158gr TC lead bullets. I got pretty good results. This is double action, off hand at 30 feet with 12 shots from each gun

7.9gr of BE-86 and loaded fairly long at an OAL of 1.610. that's where they had to be to hit the crimp groove on that bullet.

You managed to rack a group like that at 30' with a 4" .357 free-hand?...and firing double action to boot? Damn, I couldn't accomplish that on my best day at 20' with a 6" .22.

Nice shooting, my man.

I shoot an aweful lot and always shoot revolvers in double action but that is one of my best looking targets. I don't have a chronograph so I cant say how fast they were running

I agree! Puts my best targets to shame. I really need to get to the range more often and shoot more.

Looks pretty good. Do you have any work done on those triggers or are you just running the stock parts? I keep saying I'm going to slick my 686-6 up but I just haven't done it yet. Trigger is pitiful compared to the older guns, it could certainly stand to see some action from a stone and lapping compound. It could use a spring kit too. I just hate to put 40 bucks and 20 hours into a trigger just to still be disappointed. For what it's worth, my 686 won't do that well without some help, but my other revolvers will.

Both guns had stock triggers but the Highway Patrolman was built in 55 and who knows how many times that trigger has been pulled. The 686 is a no dash so its early 80's production. I'm the second owner, so again who knows how many times its been shot. Both triggers are smooth as can be and having fired thousands of rounds in double action mode I don't even notice pull weight.
I like to shoot an 8X10 steel plate at 75 feet so 30 feet doesn't seem too bad

Not too shabby there Jonesy, Back when I was Police Officer back in the early 70's we carried S&W's Model 19's, we were taught to shoot them in the double action mode. During qualification we shot mostly .38's, however, we had to shoot at least 12 rounds of 158grn. .357, included in our 60 round regimen. The trigger pull back then was exceptionally smooth, and the arms were virtually new.
