So my job might be taking me to central IA. I'm currently an active IDPA and skeet shooter. Anyone live there and could suggest a good active club/range? My wife is also an avid skeet shooter and wants me to find a nice club for the family to join. I've found a couple in the Ames/Des Moines area, but like a members opinion. Thanks!

Banner is just south of town ( Des Moines ). Then there is Daryl's in State Center.
Be advise Iowa is a NO-NFA state.

Heading back to IA

Well I have an offer for a nice position in IA and I've accepted it! I will be there later this summer and it looks like Izaak Walton is a nice range. Any other clubs out there? I'm used to shooting IDPA matches and skeet every week and this club seems pretty active.

Brownells has a range down by Montezuma.

IIRC, they do weekly trap and skeet (maybe some 5 stand too), and I think they do some pistol matches there as well. I've never been there myself.

It's in Searsboro and is not quite open to the public as I understand it.

There's USPSA clubs pretty much all over the state, the Ikes clubs are ok and some host some fun stuff. The Ikes in Ames does USPSA and IDPA. There's an un-door range in marshalltown, the Iowa River Gun Club. The Marshalltown Ikes does a couple of sleet shoots throughout the summer.

I manage the IDPA portion of the Black Hawk Pistol Club out of Waterloo and we do both USPSA and IDPA.

I'd say that the Ames Ikes is the best bet as far as all around shooting is concerned. Dayrl's is a private in door place with outdoor rifle in State Center....there are other places I'd rather go shoot and that's all I'll say about that.

^^ No, it isn't quite open to the public. But, when I called them, the guy I spoke with told me they did weekly trap and skeet, IIRC. I want to say they do it on Thursday nights, but I may be mistaken on that.

I can tell you they will rent their facilities out.

Yeah I know I've been there for classes and the Iowa Carry guys do the annual event there. Nice place. I wish the'd open it up for a membership program.

And I wish they'd have some dedicated handgun ranges. I approached them about doing the IDPA state championship there; while it was WELL equipped for rifles it just didn't cut the mustard for handguns.

The Ames boys doa credible job of IDPA, but they do occassionally "phone one in" on ya. Boone's are apparently ALL done by telephone, 2 stages 34 rounds, that sort of thing. Linn County is another credible one. Blackhawk is just getting started so the jury is still out on them. JD typically runs close to 100 rounds, but he's new and tends to run all 18 round stages--a common mistake. I'd give them a shot and you decide, eh?

Thanks for all the info! I'll be checking these clubs out next month. Hk Dan, I'm not familiar with the term "phone one in" in the context of a match. Could you briefly explain? I've been running IDPA matches at our club for the past 4 yrs, maybe I can help the Ames guys out every once in a while.
