No, it is not a self defense exercise, but it is a very good moving target exercise which can hone skills necessary for self defense.
We shoot Texas Stars differently where I shoot. We start by shooting the lowest point first. That means the star will unbalance and move. This will definitely try a person's skill much more than shooting from the top down and trying to make the star move as little as possible to get easy shots.
