shortage of guns

Yeah another problem I am noticing besides just the guns being unavailable is I can't hardly find powder anywhere I'm about to start making my own

I picked up mine From Midway USA a couple weeks ago, an Uberti Sheriff's model 1858.

I think it's more what y'all were saying about the factories in Italy, combined with black powder revolvers are a pretty low priority for most places at this point. They're not trying real hard to get them in unless that's their business, and if they're primarily in the black powder gun business, they're probably not a high priority dealer when it comes to manufacturers. Combined with a shortage of manufacturing, is pretty bad. I'm much more worried about genuine gunpowder getting more difficult to get because of regulations then BP revolvers.

Apparently I spoke too soon. Tried ordering from them and their supplier is out of stock. So it looks like they are listing inventory they do not have. Guess I am still on the hunt for a nice 1858 44, preferably with adjustable sights.

FWIW, last week I ordered two Pietta Dance revolvers from Jeddiah Starr and received them two days later via FEDEX.

One is mine, the other is a birthday gift for my dad.

How recent are the proof marks?
Are they Pietta or Traditions?
I ask because I wonder if they're getting new stock from EMF, and if EMF is supplying other outfits instead of selling directly.

arcticap

I just checked EMF's website and the only two black powder revolvers they have listed as "Limited Quantity In Stock" are the Dance Bros. revolvers. Everything else is still "Temporarily Out Of Stock."

That's interesting.
I have a hard time believing that they don't have priority receiving guns as an importer, and are simply choosing to distribute them as a wholesaler instead.
I think that maybe EMF don't want to undercut the other businesses that they supply, since the other companies rely on them for guns to sell.

COVID hit the Brescia area of Italy hard. That is where most Italian repros are made. Most makers are
using computerized milling machines now, whether that helps production can not say. I was lucky to
get mine years back. There is talk of limiting all firearms imports by the new Administration. Would that
apply to these antique repros? Hope not. As for real black powder that is still available--but for how
long? There will be enough to fill demand but the regulatory climate is not good. Wisdom is to get
some extra to put aside. Same for percussion caps. Dems want to stop all online sales of ammo
which will likely apply to powder as well. Black powder too? Very uncertain times. Do not hoard-- but do stock up.

You know its rough when the local gun shop is out of snap caps. Finally got some Friday. I will have to let my history teacher buddy know there is a shortage of flint for his pirate pistol reproduction.

I have a relationship like that with one of my suppliers. We’re their biggest wholesale customer and they take care of us. Still, a pump system I ordered in June (from Italy) just arrived December 15th. Italy is struggling under the weight of the epidemic.

Traditions branded, made by Pietta.

They are NOS. The date code on them is for 2008.

Grafs and Sons had "less than 5" Traditions brass frame 51s a day or so. All of any model is sold out now.

I will need to work out how to use Pyrodex if I can find any - even THAT is sold out locally. I might have to do something nuts and figure out what is a good SD load with a 44 round ball and FFFG in a brass frame 1851...need a holster too.
I had an 1858 Sheriff model several years ago that I sold unfired because BP wasn't "it" for me at the time. REALLY wish I'd had my head screwed on straight.

Oh yes, and lest I forget to mention it, Jedediah Starr appears to have a selection of revolvers in stock: Jedediah Starr Trading Co. On Line Store (jedediah-starr.com)
Hi. I am brand new to the HIGHROAD and to Black Powder. I know this is an old thread but I wanted to ask if Jedediah Starr Trading Post is a good and reputable place to purchase from? I have bought supplies from Graf, Midway, Dixie and made a few eBay purchases. I appreciate your time and any advice you might have. I have an Uberti Walker, Uberti 1858, Uberti 1851 Navy circa 1962 and have yet to shoot any black powder. :-( I have been combing the internet since October/November for great information to help educate me on proper and safe practices. I have found a lot of great info on the HIGHROAD and finally just joined. I am just taking my time and looking forward to the day I actually go shoot some. :) I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing back from you when you have a moment. Thank you

Dave,
Hi. I am new here on the HIGHROAD. Just joined yesterday. I have just ordered a revolver from Jedediah Starr. I did it old school meaning mail order. LOL. It was actually kind of fun doing that. Took me back to my more youthful years and actually made me think of when it was nice to show trust once again. Anyway, It looks like you have had good experience buying from them? I contacted them to make sure that they had what I was looking for and they let me know that they had received my order and money order. They said they are 4-5 days behind on shipping due to the domino effect of the pandemic. Thank you for your time. Tim (Georgia)

Welcome to THR, Zulch.

I had a positive experience ordering from Jedediah Starr when I ordered the Dance revolvers, as well as a subsequent order for Treso nipples. Both orders were placed via their website.

No doubt you’ve read of the importance of cleaning your guns as soon as you get home, and maybe like me that they can wait a little while. I spent all day and evening at the range when I first got my NMA along with my ROA and Lyman rifle I had been slowly pushing 200 rds through to break it in. I shot nothing but the crappy Pyrodex my father gave me in that rifle and left it for morning. It was rusted pretty badly and took hours getting it cleaned up. Someone told me that if one doesn’t have the time or capability to properly clean their revolver to use an oil which will saturate the fouling leaving no room for moisture. I tested it using Ballistol, which I greatly love, leaving both revolvers in the garage for a few days during a normal hot humid summer, and not a speck of rust.

Ballistol is either well received or despised it seems. Many hate the smell (black licorice) and some state it’s not a great long term oil. My guns have been mostly stored for about 7 years, one loaded, and I’d need some touch ups on one or two within a year. I periodically check them with an oily patch (9-15 months). 2 guns have been coming out clean lately. It may not be best for sure. But what I like about it is how it emulsifies allowing it to kid with any moisture after cleaning, mixing, and then allowing the water to evaporate. It’s what I used WD-40, but I don’t have to clean that out to lubricate the metal.

It was created for the German military, in 190-something I believe, and it’s designed for metal, wood, and leather so everything my gun has or resides in. People dilute it for cleaning with as well as patch lube (Moose Milk). I intend to try it as a patch lube.

I got my revolver a year or so ago. I was able to find power at the Phoenix gun show a few months back, plus round balls. I am set for a time with caps but will run out of those before anything else. I know what y'all mean when you say the shelves-poof-went bare. Here in Phoenix, I am glad I am set and not in need of much right now. I will keep looking at the gun shows so I can last the 4 years that I know will come down to trouble for us law abiding good ole boys.
