shortage of guns

Since this thread started out about a shortage of guns I was wondering if thats still true? I have looked on Cabelas website but you can't tell anything from that because everything is OOS and they don't update anything apparently. I was curious because I bought a Pietta Sheriffs model 44 Remington and have never shot it and was considering selling it. I just don't shoot like I used to and don't have that much interest in BP right now. I am considering selling most of my BP rifles and just keeping the 45 caliber Hawken I built from a kit.

Thomas. Hi. I have seen revolvers come and go quickly on Midway. I just bought another from Jedediah Starr. They seem to have more than other places but in general they are few and far between still. They trickle in then out again. Gunbroker.com folks selling BP revolvers are going for a premium. You might think about listing it there if you really want to give it up . Tim

If it has never been fired then you're looking at getting at least $300 for it on gunbroker. There is still a shortage of black powder guns, but that's only with online retailers. Gunbroker has some things, not everything, while online retailers are pretty much as bad as they were 6 to 12 months ago.

There will be no improvement for at least another year, possibly 2 years.

Thomas, Good morning. I am very new to this site and black powder. I am of course very excited about it. I got the bug back OCT of last year. I have just been accumulating things that I need ever since. Reading a lot has also helped pique my interest even more. I am not trying to be nosy, If I may ask, why do you not shoot much anymore? I can see that you are a seasoned veteran to this site and I'm sure to BP as well. Thanks for your time. Hope to hear back from you. :)
Tim

I have 4 Pietta 1858 Remingtons and just love them. One is brand new in the box never shot that I was going to use as a project but won't happen in the near future. I would sell it and replace it later to help a new shooter if anyone is in need during this shortage. Give me a PM if you are needing one.

Hi Zulch. I will give you some of the reasons I don't shoot much anymore. First is my health or rather problems from diabetes. I have nephropathy in my lower legs and feet and it makes it hard to walk on uneven terrain like out in the woods of fields to shoot at my buds land. With the numbness in my feet I stumble over branches and roots I can't feel. And since my bud built his home made airplane he no longer cares much about shooting. His whole life is wrapped up in his plane. And I mean whole life. If he isn't flying it he is working on it. I never saw anything that needs so friggin' much maintenance done to it. He will still shoot a little but its not like it used to be.

And I guess getting older I don't have the desire to shoot like I did 40+ years ago or even 5 years ago. Or even deer hunt. I am the only one who likes the meat and usually end up giving it back to my bud who eats lots of deer meat. I don't know your age but I bet you are young and raring to go when it comes to shooting. Thats how I was when I really started way back around 1982. I would go shoot two-three times a week. And I loved to hunt. didn't matter what. Just as long as I got to go hunt. So enjoy yourself. Its a great sport. And I'm not going to sell all my guns. Some are earmarked for my two sons. Some I just really like to look at and handle. But I have way too many guns for my own use anymore. So sending a few to others who would like to have them seems like the right thing to do.

Take care and thanks for asking.

Thomas. Hi. Thank you for the post. Very kind of you to share. I’m 61. Don’t feel as good as I used to. My Dad, now deceased suffered from neuropathy as well. Think he was taking Gabapentin or something like that. I have lower back pain fairly regular. Frustrating but I don’t have to tell you that. I wish your buddy would take a rest from the airplane and you guys could go shoot. Sounds like you would like to. I’ve never even shot mine yet. Hope to very soon. Thank you for your kind wishes for me to enjoy the sport. I welcome any advice from you if you are up to sharing. You are a seasoned vet at this. so good to talk with you too. Tim

Zulch I started shooting BP at least 30 years ago. At first I almost gave up because I could not get my gun to be accurate. Then I read a BP book written by Sam Fadala and followed what he wrote. My problem was that I was blowing patches. I bought a 54 cal Cabelas Hawken with the starter kit. The kit came with .010 thick patches that were way to thin. After I bought some real pillow ticking with the blue stripes on it my accuracy problems were solved.

After that I fell in the BP hole pretty deep. I started building kits and buying BP rifles in pawn shops that were in rough shape and redoing them by stripping the stocks and refinishing and browning the metal. Sold them for a good profit too. I have killed one deer and one elk with BP rifles. They work for hunting every bit as well as you have read.

This is the Sam Fadala book that set me on the straight and narrow on black powder. If you are new to this buy this book now and start reading. Its the best investment you will make in learning to shoot and enjoy black powder.

Thank you Thomas. I will check the book out. I appreciate your advice very much. That’s what I like about this site. All these people who are willing to share, guide and teach new folks like myself, the ropes. I sure hope you get to shoot again Thomas. Like I said earlier. It sounds like you would like to. Thank you, Tim

You have plenty of company in bp enthusiasm. Not to worry. I am not buying more at present but part of that is lack of supply and part is that I am too busy shooting.

However... me being "new" to all this BP Cap an Ball thing....I am lookin fer an 1860 Army.....hmmmmm....maybe?:uhoh:

brewer12345, Good morning. Thank you. I needed that.

FWIW, last week I ordered two Pietta Dance revolvers from Jeddiah Starr and received them two days later via FEDEX.

One is mine, the other is a birthday gift for my dad.

Dave, Good morning and great news. Jedediah Starr came through with my order. Came FedEx Sunday. Even though a mail in order it was a quick turn-around. I will certainly buy from them again. My first Pietta, 1861 Navy. Have a great day and thank you for your help. Tim

Hey zulch don't worry. There are plenty still shooting their smoke wagons. I am not just looking at reducing my BP guns but also my smokeless guns. I have somewhere around 70 guns now and its hard to shoot that many. Some I haven't fired in years and more than a few have never been shot. I don't believe in safe queens either. I just haven't got around to shooting them yet.

J.S. doesn't always have everything they list. Awhile back I had ordered something, don't remember what [ the Chinese Flu has me forgetting lots of things ] , and I had to call and found out they didn't have what I ordered. They never notified me they were out. So for me, I look to other places to order items. Glad to hear you had success.

Paul,
Hi. Thank you for your input. I badgered them up front asking...are you sure that you have this item in stock? hahahahah they said yes and ready to ship. It was a shot in the dark but I got lucky it sounds. I also was looking for some .36 cal 375 RB's and the site said out of stock then i asked them via email and they said ..uhhh....we have those in stock....I told them their site said they had none.. About 5 minutes later I checked the site and they updated the site to show in stock. hahahahahaha. I guess they are just short staffed and slammed by customers. I did the mail order thing. First time ever doing that so I was a little nervous if not worried to death. Good report though, all in all. I do appreciate your comment. :)

The thing that still amazes me is that these things just show up in the mail!
