Shot an M1 Garand for the first time today.

One of the great pleasures for a rifleman in my opinion. Nice stock, btw; what is the CMP grade for the rifle and origin of the receiver/stock?
I made an overnight road trip to get mine from CMP Aniston, and was rewarded with a late-era Springfield. Looked new on the inside but was mated to an old Danish return stock, got it off the "rack grade" rack and got a deal.
+1 on the adjustable gas plug! Q for others who use it, does it mitigate problems caused by heavier bullets?

During boot camp In Paris Island i trained on the M1. Likewise in Infantry School I carried an M1. I has an M1 on my shoulder aboard ship at the Bay of Pigs and at the Cuban Missile Crisis. I loved the M1. It workers in any weather, climate, or environment. Sand in the receiver — no problem: eject the clip, use your finger to remove sands, reinsert the clip an BANG. In 1965 they issued me an M14, which was a POS compared to the M1. In 1967 the issued me an M16 . I used to say I think a strong wind could jam it. Based join experience If i were to be cast out into an uncertain world of danger I would want an M1 on my shoulder.

One thing about going to the CMP marksmanship park almost every week is I see a lot of Garands. In the store, on the range, and being carried to cars. Wish I could have one but they are outside my budget for just a fun rifle. Really enjoy my M1917 though. The spiritual father of the M1.

You can get genuine USGI M2 Ball ammo from the CMP (TheCMP.org). Federal, in the American Eagle brand, PPU {PRVI Partizan} along with Sellier & Bellot makes ammo specifically loaded for the M1 Garand, so marked on the boxes. The US Rifle Cal .30 M1 is a real Battle Rifle. Also look at TheCMP.org website for info on M1 specific shooting matches. Watching the video, it appears you MAY have the "7th round stoppage" issue. The CMP has a video on that issue. Quick fix is to load your en-bloc clips so the top round is on the left, away from the raised 'pimple' on the clip

Glad you have a family heirloom to cherish.
I helped out a fellow shooter who needed money.
Decided the M1 Garand more then I could handle and donated it to a US Marine Sniper Squadron for their museum.

Kind a fun driving onto a Marine Base with a rifle. I think my USAF Offficer's car pass sticker got me past the check point. My spouse was 'thrilled' to see so many young fit men. Unfortunately for her she has me.

Not so much "softer" as a relatively fast burning powder and relatively light bullet. A Shuster vented gas plug is a good upgrade which will allow for the use of more commercial off-shelf ammo without damaging the op-rod. 👍
Right, more to do with the burning weight of the powder, and the weight of the bullet.

Yes. It would not hurt my feelings if I was left in the danger zone with my M1 instead of my AK or M16 Clone. (semi-auto, for you creepy lawyers listening out there) But you hear so much, from so many about how it is obsolete and can't compete with a short and stubby AR with doo-dads hanging all over it. I suppose in a shooting contest it might not win. But I also suppose I would not want to get in a fight with my AR or AK against somebody armed with the M1.

The M1 is the perfect one-shot-one-kill rifle. It is accurate out to 500 yards. Neither the AK or the M16 match that. The 30-o6 cartridge is much more barrier blind than the 7.62 of 556. In a fight at a distance the M1 rules. In CQB it’s a toss up.

In CQB it may come down more to the skill or expertise, or lack of, of the shooters. And of course in a contest the contest can be tailored to give either one the advantage. I don't want to be on the wrong end of a M1 for any reason. !!! :)

This. 30-06 is stupid powerful. Like shooting the sand in front of our redneck range looks like a claymore went off lol.
