Shot my Mauser today

I shot my Model 98 Mauser today for the first time. It's one that SOG was selling. dou 44 on the receiver. Anyone know where it was made? I shot 70 rds through it. Pretty accurate as to windage. Shooting a little low as to elevation at ranges below 300 yards. It was dead on at 300 yards. Should you align the sights with the top of the front sight even with the top of the rear sight? The action is a little stiff when I cycled the action from my shoulder. All in all, though...I am very pleased.

I've been told that 8mm Mauser is about equivalent to .30-'06. Maybe it's the heavier recoil calibers I've been shooting lately but the recoil seemed tame. I haven't shot a .30-'06 in over 10 years and in the interval I've been shooting .300 Win Mag, .35 Whelen, and .458 Win Mag. But basically, I could shoot this rifle all day.

What ammo were you shooting? U.S. commercial will generally shoot low and have less recoil because it is less powerful than the sS ball that the rifle was sighted for. That stuff sends off a 196 grain bullet at 2600 fps. Even though the wide butt helps spread the recoil, most shooters can definitely tell when the rifle goes off.

I would think that the reason you felt less recoil is because a mauser, generally, is heavier than current model production rifles. As far as being right on at 300 yards, from what I have heard, these old mausers were made tohit on at 300 yards.

I'll have to look at the headstamps. It's surplus. Comes on stripper clips in bandoliers of seventy.

Jim, the head stamp has 7.9/FS/1943/TOC...the O might have a dot at the top. My eyes are not what they once were.

Thats Turkish Surplus....definitely not loaded to commercial specs...very hot and very corrosive! As long as you follow the steps for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo you will be fine though. I have about 1,500 rounds of Turk Surplus I love the stuff but stay away from 1947 dated.

Oh, I can tell when the rifle goes off. It's just that it is not at all unpleasant.
