Yep, I shot sporting clays with a young man that placed second last week in sporting clays.
I beat him! But only by a little.
He is 9 years old, and placed 2nd in the novice division of the 4H, Texas Parks and Wildlife youth shoot last weekend at Elm Fork.
Man what a weekend that was. Lots of youngsters from 9 up through teens. They had an area for trying archery. They had an air rifle range. They even had a couple of guys teaching basic fly fishing. Lots of young ladies too, and man were they good!
They topped the day off with a big dinner, barbecue, fried chicken, burgers and dogs. At the awards ceremony, they gave away 8 new Beretta autos. They had a father son/daughter flurry competition, and the two winning teams won a new Beretta shotgun for the youngster, and a Kahr .40 pistol for the dad!
Lots of raffle stuff, and tickets were passed out for exceptional gun handling skills, successfully nailing particularly hard shots, etc.
Man, you should have seen the smiles on the faces of those youngsters holding their Beretta 391 Urikas that they had just won!
It was a great experience, and if you ever have the good fortune to attend one of these events, by all means do!
