I currently live in California with the Non toxic ammunition laws. I have been looking for for a 3" 12 gauge shell that performs well on coyotes. I've tried HeviX BB, Bismuth and steel with less than satisfactory results.

My options for off the shelf ammo locally are limited, and Dead coyote rounds are getting harder to find and the ones I do locate are $6 a shell.

I plan on reloading some shells for coyote with HW13 BB. I was wondering if anyone has been able to locate it in a 1 pound bag. I've found it in 10 pounds but that is way too much shot and would last me 10 life times.

I want to try using the HW13 loads if I'm not happy with them I may get some TSS.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I gave up on Non-toxic shotgun ammo a long time ago. It's either too expensive or too light (steel) to be effective. Sometimes it's just better to realize the game is over and you lost.:(

Unfortunately the county I hunt is mostly a Shotgun only area.

Are there any suitable BBs sold for BB guns that you can use? It's just a guess but is it possible?

How about these?

3" 1-1/4oz hevi-metal shells @ $1 each. I'm not sure if you said this is what you are looking for?

I think the BB's from air rifles would hold the same result's as the off the shelf steel loads I've already tried.

I have used Hevi-X BB shells and have had a lot of unrecoverable coyotes that were shot within 40 yards.

Well that won't work then! Sorry...

I just spoke to a friend and he said #4 Buckshot works much better than BB, BBB or T shot on yotes. I can't personally tell you because I have never used a shotgun on coyoties. He has done a lot of hunting in his life and when he tells me something he doesn't make it up.

You guys are correct lead #4 buck is the go to for coyotes but im in need of non toxic shotgun ammunition.

Im looking to located non toxic shot that is denser?heavier than lead and is sold in a quantity less than 25 pounds.

Would copper slugs work? I've had less than stellar results from lead buckshot even if you were allowed to use it.

Is this what you are looking for?

No slugs unfortunately.

The ITX product is less dense then lead. Would be similar to shooting hevix or kent bismuth.

Looks there are not many places that sell it I may have to either buy the 25# bag at $230 or buy TSS since its sold in one pound bags @ $40+ a pound. I probably woundnt even bother shooting coyotes anymore at these prices per shell but my kids love it too much.

Ive contacted them. They sell Hw13 BB in 25# shot bags. Thats a little to large of a quantity for me.

I know the folks at my gun club often go in together on group purchases for components. There is probably someone in your same situation that would split a bag. Must be a few hunt clubs around LA...

Try Black Cloud #BBB. It's not a heavier than lead pellet, but I've dumped a couple of coyotes with it while on goose hunts in North Dakota and it's far cheaper than the heavy shot options. Effects were similar to my high velocity BB lead dedicated coyote load. Both were 40-50 yards and took a dense pattern to the head/neck area. One was DRT, the other crawled and flopped a bit but didn't go far.

These throw a very tight pattern through the right choke (I use Carlsons "pass" choke for geese and these incidental coyotes) and hit with authority.
