I was in a tripod stand this morning that affords shots anywhere from ten to about fifty yards. I used buckshot last year but wanted to try out some slugs this year since fifty yards is a bit far for buckshot. I was able to sight in my Remington 11-87 at 50 yards this week and snuck out of the house around 5:30 to be in my stand before legal shooting.
Sunrise was at 7:27. Legal shooting 30 minutes before that. At 7:07 a doe walked out at 35 yards and stopped broadside. My 11-87 has tru-glo sights so even in the dim light, I put a bead on her vitals. After the shot, she literally was knocked off her feet by a Remington 2 3/4" rifles slug. She rolled back up and took off.
I waited almost 2 hours then started tracking. I was surprised how far she went. There was a good blood trail. It tapered off a bit about 30 yards in and I thought I saw her 30 yards further down a trail I'd abandoned about two years ago.
Lucky for me there she was, and much bigger than I thought. She's on ice now. I'll process tomorrow.
And here's the tools of the trade after cleaning.
Pretty happy with the slug performance. It was a through and through with little to no expansion, but like I said there was a good blood trail to follow.
