My daughter was born on Dec 22, 2004. I like having a US Mint Proof Set of the coins that were minted in my birth year, so I picked up two different sets of coin proofs for my daughter...Despite not knowing if she may want to shoot when she gets older, I've been really tempted on buying a 40th Anniversary Ruger 10/22 for her. With 2004 being her birth year and the year of this commemorative rifle, I was thinking it may be an interesting gun to buy her. I figured I'd buy it, store it for 6-8 years with periodic checking and oiling of it, and then give it to her when I felt she is old enough to go to the range with me. I can picture a "family day" at the range with me, my wife, and our daughter taking our three 10/22s to the range together. I can get a new 40th Anniversary Ruger for under $200. So......Does this sound like something that I should do?

We gave my buddy, on the day of his son's birth, a special built wooden ordnance crate with a stainless Henry singleshot .22, kiddy eye & ear protection, cleaning gear, and a selection of ammo. (figured you want the kid to pay attention to where the holes go instead of making lots of noise quikly)

If she winds up being a Barbie girl, we can talk about a set of stocks like my M14's. :)

Sounds good to me.

How about one firearm every year as she grows up? Perhaps you can raise another Tamara. :)

My step-brother received a mint coin set from an uncle when he was born and has received one every year since then.

Good idea! Folk in the knife community order a Randall or knife at the birth of a child and hold it until the child is old enough to use/appreciate it.

Training Wheels

I'm not much on long guns, so I'm thinking of buying my daughter a Ruger Single Six in 32 Mag.

Simple manual of arms, rock solid reliability, light subloads in 32 S&W, and the 32 Mag with JHP is a reasonable defense/small game/varmint round if she ever needs it.

When she is ready, I can match it with a 32 Mag SP101 for CCW. (This assumes she doesn't become a big bore addict like her papa.)

Well...DUH!

I already bought my 9 month old a Ruger Bearcat .22lr, and a Chipmunk .22lr single-shot.

A 10/22 is in her future too.

Then...eventually, she'll get the 3" Model 10 .38spl, then a Glock, then a Python...then everything in my safe!

Go to your CMP and buy a Garand, a 1903 and a 1903A3. Leave 'em in the cosmoline. Keep all the paperwork in a safety deposit box at your bank. They could well be her college fund. 20 years from now they'll be worth much more than the money you'll invest now. Firearms are a much better investment than any set of coins.

A friend of mine bought his newborn son an AR15.

Go for it. (though, I can't say I condone the purchase of a Ruger)

I think it's a wonderful idea. I have a New Single Six .22 and it's one of my favorite guns. It's a great teaching tool too that I'm sure will give her hours of fun at the range with her Dad.

Certainly! And why not pick up a Mark II for her as well; she'll be ready to shoot it soon enough.

{Now that Bill Ruger's gone, I guess that it's OK for honest people to buy Rugers again}

Yep

Buy it.

I also suggest taking a look at time of Birth and any other stats - got to be some other data that a firearm can be rationallized. 3:57 , means a .357 revo, 22" in length , another rimfire, 6 lbs and 6 oz , model 66, 6mm bolt gun...

You get the idea. Sure blame me, I'm used to it and make a great scapegoat.

Your Welcome!

:D

I think its a great idea!

And congrats on the new arrival, too.
Let me suggest engraving the stock with her name and birthday and a nice phrase from you on it. Something simple and sweet like:

"For my daughter, Little Miss Kramer Krazy
Born 22 dec 2004
I love you, Dad"

This way when you give it to her, she will know a few things:
1. Daddy Loves her
2. This is HER rifle
3. This wasn't an afterthought
4. She can have an afternoon with Dad anytime she wants if she agrees to go shoot
so this gift will either seem super-sweet if she's into rifles, or at least sweet if she's not. But the best part you will know in your heart that your baby girl will always have at least one rifle because even if she isn't interested and never wants another gun she will never throw away the special one daddy gave her- even if its in a closet collecting dust.

Yes, Buy her the gun !!!! or two, or three, or ....

I bought my son a Rem model 7 in 243 when he was 6 months old and put it in the safe. He is now old enough to shoot it, no deer yet but we will try again tomorrow.

I am planning on doing the same thing real soon. My son was born on November 2nd, 2004 (election day). I really want to get him a 40th Anniversary 10/22 as his name is Ruger also (yes, it really is). :)
