Should I buy the gun in the display case?

Always ask for a NIB gun! If you frequent the shop often and know that the gun in the case just made it there in the last day or two, no biggy. When I buy new, I want new, not "demo". To me a gun that has been handled and dry fired quite a bit is a demo gun even if never fired. I want a new gun, or a generous discount. If I am buying a gun that has the potential for becoming a safe queen, I will never take a discount, I want new, never been opened.

Also, if it's going to get a scratch, I want to be the idiot to do it.

I want NIB also...it's amazing what customers do to handguns when they are "checking them out"......of course it's amazing what some of the owners and workers do to them.....

And yes........wax...........I use Boeshield.....fabulous product. I wax all my guns, even my HKs.....

I bought a Mark II at Academy a while back. The display model was scratched all over from rough handling, much worse for wear than my 15 yr old Mark II. They brought out a NIB.

At "better" gun stores the floor models don't usually look so rough, but I always ask for NIB if available. If not available, check them out carefully.

dry fire

Depends on the firearm. 1911's & Hipower : the trigger improves after @ 500 times of dry fire (make sure it stays oiled up well). Rimfires-never :the firing pin hits the edge of the chamber and will eventually deform it to make the shell too tight.

...to which he replied "no, it won't hurt the gun. I do it all the time".
I would have let him get most of the way through the paperwork. Then I would have called over the manager/owner. I'd ask him to show me that cool "Bogart" thing again. While he was doing his one handed flip & snap, I would be counting my money, which I would promptly put back into my wallet and say to the manager/owner, "Money talks and Bulls--t walks, and my Money is walking away his Bulls--t."

I have noticed that this might not be a problem in my local store as every time I have gone in it has been a different gun in the case.

Took me a couple of trips to figure that out.

I field strip and wax. I have never detail stripped one of my guns. I suppose it I was going to store it for some time I might try......
