Sig P220 Combat question?

I'm a little confused. I am reading a description of this pistol off of impactguns website. Their (impactguns) description reads;

....Internal parts and controls are coated or phosphated.....

So I'm not sure which of the two it is; coated or phosphated? Or both? (I'm guessing maybe some parts are phosphate while others have a different finish?)

Then again, on sig's official site, there is no mention of coated OR phosphate? They simply state the internal parts and controls are phosphated.

Basically my question is; does anyone know what the 220 combat's internals/controls are coated in?

I purchased one a few years ago and the catalog description read “Internal parts and controls are coated or phosphated for extreme corrosion resistance and reduced friction.” To me that meant some parts were coated and others were phosphated. Don’t ask me which, but it’s a fine pistol.

Hmmm... So a catalog from a few years back is saying the same thing that I read.... Phosphated ORRRR coated.

But now, Sig's site simply says...... Phosphated. So now I'm REALLY wondering.

I might be calling Sig's number to find out for sure.


By the way, the Sig in the pic looks like olive drab, the ones I've seen have a more golden look to it. Is the OD color just the way it shows up in the pic?

I would let the 220s reputation speak for itself and go ahead and not worry about it.

I think they just decided to remove the confusion. Coatings and Phosphate are both coatings. Coating might mean more like paint or Teflon while phosphate is more like a chemical reaction. Both coat the surface.

Let me show a response I got (from the other forum I mentioned where I got a rude response) about the coating on the internals:

My internals look chrome plated and the mags that came with it were phosphate coated. The phosphate is very rough. Wouldn't be good for moving parts. You'll want to examine or have the dealer check. Not all combats were created equally....

Their input is making me a little leery now.

Okay I just got off the phone with Sig.

The cust. serv guy I got ahold of told me three times after I asked three times if the parts are indeed phosphate coated. He told me yes, they are phosphate and not anything else but phosphate.

I asked what the mags were finished in. He said stainless.

Am I being paranoid thinking that a firearms manufacturer would intentionally give misinformation to it's customers?

Personally, I don't think you could go wrong with a combat model or a plain jane P220.. Around my neck of the woods, they're both the same price NIB..

My trusted gun clerk buddy did tell me that the combat model/s have an extra coating to prevent rust under combat, wet, ongoing, conditions vs the standard plane jane types.. But I went with a semi-plane jane model.

So, with that in mind, either way, you're going to get a great gun, be it a combat model, or plane jane, P220.

I have an older model. The steel internals are indeed phosphate coated the hammer and trigger are stainless steel. By the way, the single best move I made with my P220 was to put XS Big Dot express sights on it. The second best was to put the original plastic grips back on since the houge rubber ones kept bunching up my shirt when I carry.
