I have a Sig P220, the Exeter version, with the internal extractor. I had a single failure to extract a fired case out of 50 rounds several weeks ago. No biggie. Shot it again the other day, same problem.

The slide is retracting fully because the slide breech has pushed the next round up under the partially extracted case, effectively tying up the pistol. My other .45's chug along w/o a hiccup with the same ammo (4.8 gns WW231, 200LSWC or a 230 FMJ).

Do I have to send this to Sig, or is there an updated extractor I can order and install myself?

They no longer make the internal extractor. If you go over to Sig Forum and do a search on the extractor, you will find a guy (I forget his name right now) who still makes them.

Gray Guns makes a replacement. If you send it to Exeter they will adjust it and send it back. It may or may not fix the issue.

it's not just the extractor that needs to be adjusted

what's causing the problem is a set of tolerances which compound to produce a failure to extract. as rellascout said, the factory can adjust the extractor and clean up the other issues, but the problem might return.

the problem is the location of the extractor in the slide when they changed from the folded carbon steel slides to the milled stainless steel ones. it works most of the time, but other factors in manufacturing can combine to cause the failure

for whatever outrageous price Sig charges, it BETTER fix the problem, seriously. they don't even have a toll free number. I love my P220, despite all of the problems it's had. That's the only reason I haven't gotten rid of it. Sig is only slightly better than HK in customer service.

so customer service is on OUR dime? they don't even have a toll free number on which to tell us how much a fix of their own product will bankrupt us? lol. wow.

also, for a measly 130 dollars, they'll put on their "siglite" sights and LOOK OVER the pistol and advise you how much more you'll pay to fix it, should anything be wrong with it. oh yeah, you pay shipping as well. how about backing up your product, within reason? i can see if you shot handloaded ammo and blew up your gun. parts wearing out and such, that's a different story. 800 dollar and up guns should last FOREVER and a day.

NOT buying another Sig anytime soon. Love the guns, hate the company. If I ever did buy another one, it'd be a well cared for W. German gun or Surplus and I'd look it over HARD and even try a snap cap if I could. I love the guns so much, but I'm not rich. I can't spend good money on something I'm not positive will work dead on.

I'd contact Grayguns and get a BOTTOM LINE price on a FIX and a guarantee that the price you pay will cover it AGAIN if it fails to address the issue until the issues addressed. That's only fair, isn't it? Otherwise what are you paying for?

Thanks a bunch for all the input. I understand problems with firearms, so I'm not overly upset at this point. However, I don't want to drop a bunch a money with someone (Sig for instance) and have an iffy' repair.

This is not a Sig bashing at all, love my P220, but my CZ's, Glocks, Kimber, Colts, Norcs, Les Baer, etc., etc., have never had an extraction problem in 10's of thousands of rounds.

I'd rather install an extractor myself and adjust as needed, even if it takes a couple attempts.

Call Sig.. tell them the issue. Ask that they send you a pre paid Fed Ex label. Send it in under their lifetime warranty. Make a stink tell them you know its a know issue if they give you any push back. '

This should not cost you a dime. Do not pay for this issue. Make Sig fix it period.

+1 for Rella.

Man, I love Sig guns. But the customer service and overall "it's your problem" attitude I sense from that company is offputting. The sig design is my favorite pistol design, bar none.

Rella,

I may actually do the same thing with mine. Problem is, I'm NOT the original owner...it's a West German KF marked. Would their warranty still technically apply? I don't want to be off base with the company here.

You should not have the same issue with a W german gun. It has a folded carbon steel slide and a different extractor design but I would still call them. Your road will be a longer one to hoe .

Do not mention that you are not the original owner. They will not ask so do not tell.

good point. The gun's working...BETTER, since I did all that stuff to it.

But the extractor isn't what I'd call reliable. It's weaker than I'd like. There's times where it seems like it could have a hiccup at a time when I'd rather it not.
