First off, I have seen many threads about this particular gun and almost all bode well for it. What exactly makes this gun better than a 226 or 229 in 9mm or any other 22x that Sig still produces? There must be a reason that Sig stopped producing the 228...

Second, would a NIB 228 for $800 be a decent deal, or should I pass it up? I also found a used one (supposedly 98%) for $525. Let me know what price range I should be looking for.

Its all a matter of preference, a lot of people like the 228 in 9mm because of the stamped slides vs. the machined stainless slide due to the fact that its slightly less top heavy, many consider it to be better balanced then say the 229 in 9mm (the one the 228 is usually compared against, only difference being the slide) I do however think the 226 is still more popular then the 228, its just that a 228 is smaller so easier to conceal. And I don’t believe they stopped manufacturing the 228 but rather only manufacture them to fill certain government contracts. (Someone may correct me if I’m wrong.

$800 is around what a new Sig goes for and NIB 228s will be harder to come by, personally Id opt for a CPO or LNIB 228 at a better price, the 525 sounds reasonable if it is in fact 98% or close.).

I agree, it is a matter of preference. The 228 and 229 are the same, except for the cosmetic difference in the slide appearance. Plus, the 229 as stated, has a slide milled from a solid piece of stainless steel. Compared to the stamped metal 228 slide. The 226 is more of a duty size auto. The barrel is only 1/2" longer and the grip is slightly larger than the compact 228 and 229. Magazine capacity differ according to the size provided or any aftermarket brands.

Thanks for the responses.

Are there any P228s that are single or double action only?

I am sort of afraid of the first shot being 12 lbs and the rest being 4.5. I am used to each shot being consistent.

Also, what makes the West German p228s better?

All P228s are German; earlier ones have "Made in W Germany" on the slides while later ones (after the unification of East and West Germany) have "Made in Germany."

The P228 has been made with DA/SA, DAO, and DAK triggers. The DA trigger pull on my P228 is so smooth that it feels a lot lighter than it really is.

The P228 is still being made in Germany, but is not being imported into the US. SigArms has little reason to import a model from Germany to compete with its US-produced P229.

I've had a P229 in 9mm and now have a P228. The 228 is only a little lighter and has a slightly more narrow slide but it does actually feel lighter and more compact to me. The 228 was designed for 9mm and it just shoots and feels better for me. If I wanted a 40 or 357 SIG I'd get another 229, in 9mm I really prefer the 228. --- BTW, you don't have to shoot the first shot DA, but for carry I greatly prefer that the first be DA.

I miss my P228(9MM natch')...not my P229 (357SiG)...the P228 was first, it is 2-3 ounces lighter just in the slide (more balanced)...mine was Electroless Nickled with the Trijicon SiGLite night sights (no white outline on the three dot)...it has changed hands three times since I owned it (I bought mine as soon as they were available so it is an early pistol) and I have to see it every day but the current owner won't give it up and the "pal" I sold it to "forgot" he promised me the right of 1st refusal...:scrutiny: ...my loss, I should never have sold it...HOWEVER...my new to me 1987 P225 off to SiGARMS for a new finish and the once over plus new night sights (meprolite now I understand) MIGHT just take its place...(and it fits all my old holsters...:D )
