Is the SIG SB-15 a viable option to an SBR?

Had to find out for myself, picked one up at a gun show for $125 and put it on my CMMG AR pistol.

And did some A/B shooting with my 9mm SBR (same upper, swapped lowers):

After a few mags of each at the plate rack I'd have to say if you shoot square to the target and nose to charging handle there is no functional difference. But if you like the collapsible stock fully extended, forget about it.

OTOH with the SB-15 you can't do this and stay legal:

But then I've never warmed up to vertical grips so I almost never use them.

Here is the math:

AR-15 pistol kit + $200 SBR stamp + $70 stock + $25 buffer tube

vs.

AR-15 pistol kit + $125 SIG SB-15.

I'm glad this option exists, nice article about it in this weeks Shotgun News (Jan 20, 1014 pg 76-83). At the very least the $125 will get you a lot more fun from your pistol during the long wait for the stamp!

I had an SB-15 on one of my pistols while waiting for my stamp and it works just like a stock.

If you want more length of pull (for your longer arms), use a rifle buffer tube with a spacer insert on your pistol.
