Somebody posted about a source for bottled (?) silicon to rejuvenate silicon cloths. The rags I buy off the rack don't seem particularly moist in the first place.

Can anybody give me info on that?

They're not really supposed to be moist. Silicone isn't liquid, at least not when it's on those cloths.

That said, I've never heard of any sort of "refill" setup for them. Mine has been used tons on my 1911, and it's still good to go.

How do you know

I don't want to sound like a wise a$$, but how do you know when they are "worn out"? And how do they work anyway?

I've never seen it bottled, but any hardware or auto parts store will have a spray can.

I used to use silcone, but I tired of the smell and fact that it gets all over everything.

Once they get dirty I toss them out. If you keep them in a ziplock bag they will stay good to go for quite a long time. Basically what it does is wipes away oils and dirt and sometimes small amounts of rust and replaces it with a thin layer of silicon. Helps the gun stay pretty. I use them on all of my firearms and always have one handy when shooting and hunting.

I buy the silicon spray (readily available in the camping/outdoors or automotive stores). I turn my gun socks inside out and hang them up in a well ventilated area and thoroughly spray them about once a year. I let them dry and then sack up the firearms to go back in the safe.

Eventually they do break down and you'll get rag particles on your guns. They do need to be replaced eventually.

The Hoppes silicon cloth I've got has left cloth bits all over my guns since I bought the thing. Is this usual?

I've never heard of them, period. what is the purpose?

It may sound anal, but a couple of times a month I'll wipe my guns down with these cloths. I use one in each hand so that my fingers never touch the gun.

They're already in a Cabelas silicone sock and resting on their side in a safe. I've just seen some guns where the blue deteriorated from resting on their side.

But the cloths seem to dry out, somewhat. Somebody else recommended Liquid Wrench.

No. It sounds like maybe you're aggressively rubbing some metal checkering?

used mostly to remove fingerprints and moisture from firearms

That's all I use them for and they work quite well.:)

I stick them back in the ziplock bag they come in...I use them after the weapon is already clean so dirt really isn't a factor.

eh. i use paper towels.
the silicone cloth i use only to impress upon guests the fact that i value my guns and i dont want them treating them like toys.

Got this in my email this morning and thought of this thread. Not sure if Harbor Freight can be found nationally but...

Paper towels?

Hm.

Not for me.

Apart from the fact that it's fairly abrasive (you can strop knives on paper,) you never know for sure what salts and chemicals are in it.

I could be wrong, but it's not for me.

I have seen the bottle of liquid at Academy. It comes in a small (1oz), clear, eye dropper style bottle. I don't remember the price.

I have one that I have had for years. I put 2 or 3 drops to "refresh" the gray flannel cloth. It usually lasts about 2 months. A little bit goes a long way.

It is slipperier than snail snot. One drop on the slide rail really loosens things up.

I use a Silicone cloth to wipe off my guns after cleaning, and use Remington Dri-lube(spray silicone) for a lubricant. The Dri-lube doesn't pick up a lot of dirt like oils, etc.,and have never had a rust problem with guns treated this way.

I use a "Stealth Cloth". It is not a silicone cloth, but apparently the Navy Seals have used them. They are kind of wet and when they dry out you use mineral spirits to refresh them. Great rust preventative. I get them from Brownell's.

A silicone cloth is a great accessory and I've used them since the 1960s. The silicone (accordign to Outers) never wears off and if the rag gets dirty, launder it and it's restored to perfectly new. I don't know about the last but it does keep the rust off. That and Breakfree CLP are my two mainstays and my guns look 100%

You can tell that they're still "good" if you inadvertently drop one on your couch after a range day...and leave it there overnight....

No, it was NOT my husband that did it. It was me. I have to try to figure out how to get that out of microfibre without spreading it around and making it worse.
