I usually just use them for a year or two and buy a new one. They're cheap enough. I either get the Outers or Mossy Oak ones and haven't had any problems with bits of the rag coming off.

I think they work well. They are not a substitue for real oil/lube, but they work nice for removing fingerprints after handling. I give the cloth a few sprays from a can of silicone spray now and then.
