The "Too many Guns"? thread got me thinking.

I know guys who have collections of Winchesters, Colt's or Smith & Wesson's. Another friend simply buys everything and anything with no direction or theme to his acquisitions. I call him a "numbers" collector.

Another friend has a beautiful collection of Freedom Arms M-83 SA's. He buys one or two every year. There are so many variables when ordering the FA's. He has round and octagon barrels in all sorts of different lengths. Every cartridge imaginable from .22 rimfire to .500 Linebaugh. Yet they are ALL still M-83 FA's.

I DO like older S&W revolvers, they are the MAIN subject of my collection. But I also have a sprinkling of Colts, HK's, SIG's , Walther and even High standard .22 Target autos. If it interests me, I want an example of it.

As a kid I liked the James Bond movies. So of course I have a Walther PPK. Grew up in the golden age of TV cowboy shows...so of course a .45 Colt, Single Action Army in the safe.

I shot NRA Bullseye when I was in the Natl Guard as my State had a pistol team. Really enjoyed it. So over the years I have acquired all of the various target pistols I shot as well as the ones I simply lusted after, like the High Standard Victors and Citations.

My love of S&W's started when I was 8 or 9 and fired my Uncle's off duty gun, a little S&W .32 long, J frame snubby. I think THAT started my S&W mania.

The majority of my collection and interests DO lie with older S&W revolvers, But I still like so many other designs, and models.

I've always been drawn to the 1911 .45 acp, Colt Python, Walther PPK, CZ75, Ruger Blackhawk, snub .38's, .22 Target pistols, the Browning Highpower, etc. Firearms, that were historically significant, or simply filled a certain niche , or were unique in some way. Or held some special interest to me like my little .32 snubby. Anyone else suffer from the same affliction?

What's YOUR collection interest or direction? And why?

Yep, if it ain't got history, it ain't for me....BUT....it has to be a shooter, no unobtainium calibers. Fr8 Mauser and Ishapore Enfield in .308. Garand and Springfield's in '06, Astra A600 in 9mm parabellum, Remington 51 in .380, Victory model Smith in .38spl, Savage 99 in .243....you get the picture. My dad grabs anything old, but rarely shoots.....I think every rifle he owns is in a different extinct Euro caliber. Different strokes......

No particular theme or direction to my gun collection. Have some mainly for target shooting and plinking, some for hunting (though I really don't do much of that any more), some that were gifts, some for home defense and concealed carry, and some just for the sheer pleasure of having them.

I'm very utilitarian. I own a Glock 19 for carry and an M&P 9 that my wife uses for home defense when I'm not home. She also owns a Ruger LC9 that she carries. All 9mm so we only buy one caliber of ammunition. My wife wants a Glock 19 of her own and if that happens the M&P and the LC9 will be retired.

I have a weird OCD numbers based theme to my collection IE 24 total Rugers 6 SA revolvers, 6 DA revolvers, 6 semi autos and 6 long guns
Plus I have to have even numbers of calibers 2 32 ACPs, 2 380s, 8 9mm and so forth.

I have a lot of older firearms that I have inherited. My purchases in the last seven years have all been new firearms. I have spent more money in the last couple of years upgrading optics.

Most recent purchase was a 22LR. Needed a gun to teach the kids on, and rounds out the basic home arsenal.

22LR plinking rifle
5.56 AR 15
308 hunting rifle
12ga pump shotgun
9mm pistol
38/357 revolver

Covers pretty much all foreseeable shooting needs.

Everything else is "interests" - C&B revolvers, Mosins, BP percussion rifles etc. Plenty of stuff I would like to get into like BPCR, flinters, more milsurp, older Winchesters etc, but there's various constraints that slow it to something we do over a lifetime.

Robert summed it up pretty well.

Sometimes I feel like a gun slut - I can find something to like in just about all of them. Don't need a reason, I just do.

I have several "themes" to my collection.
I have a hunting rifle theme.
A hunting shotgun theme.
Defensive shotgun theme.
Modern sporting rifle theme.
Classic revolver theme.
Duty handgun theme (all the handguns I've carried during military/law enforcement careers).
Plinking rifle theme.
Actually got rid of all the mil-surps I'd picked up when I wanted to begin a mil-surp rifle theme; regrettably, prices on those types skyrocketed, so I'm not gonna go back there.

Here's my "utilitarian pistol" theme:

At my age I've amassed enough that I have everything covered. So I'm strictly an impulse buyer. I see it, I want it, I buy it. I figure when I'm dead the wife and kids can either keep them or sell them, it won't matter to me.

I use the everyone should have one.As in everyone should have a lever action 30-30,a pump shotgun,a double barrel shotgun,a 1911,a ar15.a single action revolver.a double action revolver.a flintlock or whatever it just keeps going and going. And to the post above it's impossible to have everything covered

You certainly have the SIG "itch" scratched!
I'm another SIG fan, but from a utilitarian standpoint. I will never buy a 210, or any rare variations. They are ALL shooters or carry guns to me. Carried a 229 for the last half of my LE career. Always liked the legacy, P series guns.

Do have an X-5 I use for Steel Challenge and a .40 All Around I have had fitted with a .357 sig and 9mm, Bar-Sto barrels. That one is really a "If I only had one" sort of affair for me. Though that will probably never happen.

Due to never having a lot of money, my firearm purchasing had started as trying to get one gun of every basic action type so that I'd be familiar with handling and shooting a variety of guns.

That idea drifted a bit with concealed carry guns as my focus turned to carry guns in a variety of sizes so that I could carry something no matter what I wore for clothing.

The one thing I've neglected owning is a pump action firearm of any type. Maybe someday, or maybe not. :)

I'm utilitarian. I've never had a sufficient budget to be a real collector, and I have to justify new purchases, at least to myself. Just about everything i have is capable of filling more than one role (CCW & nightstand gun, for example).

I'll get a wild hair and buy something to test. Went through several cheap guns. In the last 2 years I have tried a couple of Mossberg Patriots, Marlin X7, Ruger Americans, a 98 Mauser and a Zastava. I'll set one up with a scope and check them out at the range. When I get tired of playing with them they go online and when they sell I get something else. Now I have upped the ante and decided to try a Kimber 84 Hunter and a Bergara B-14.

Did the same thing with conceal guns. Tried a Sig P250 and a 238, Taurus 738, KelTec 40 cal., Ruger Lcp, LC9 and a LC380 . At the moment it is a 42 Glock. Had a few carry guns like a American Classic 1911, Sig 2022, PT 111, SARS K2P, and a Glock 19. Had several S&W Shields come through the house but sold them before I got a chance to test them.

Scopes get into the act too. I tried some of the Nikons, Legends, Vortecs and VXII's. As long as I get my money back life is good.

I've been, uh, acquiring since 1986. In the beginning, it was about numbers, and about what worked for LE, a field I entered the following year. Once in LE, it became more about utility, with a touch of "numbers" still running.

I took a hiatus for nearly two decades, returning in 2008. Then, it was "utility" again, CC-oriented, but still seeking numbers. Starting around 2013, it became kind of "anti-political", and now it's mostly that and "collectible potential", meaning firearms that are most likely to retain or increase in value, such as milsurps.

I am just an accumulator of any firearm. If I like what I see I buy it. Then I buy the stuff to reload for it. For a lot of years I was in the "gun of the month" club as I averaged at least one handgun and one long gun a month. These days it is all about getting the extra bits that I need to reload with that I passed on years ago so I could buy more guns.;)
