Fitting WGRS for Savage 24 to Barrel

Does anyone have any experience fitting a Williams Guide receiver sight on a Savage 24 (in this case, a 24C Camper)?

There are two side clamps that screw down on the grooves on top of the rifle barrel to lock the sight base in place, that's pretty obvious. What's not so obvious is how to get the sight base down onto the barrel, since the groove on the base looks like an almost zero-tolerance fit for the groove on the barrel. In other words, it looks like it could slide on from the rear, maybe, but the groove doesn't go all the way to the breech, and the sight base won't go flush down on the barrel from the top. As a result, the off-side clamp won't even reach the groove.

I must be missing something, but I'm not sure what. Any suggestions appreciated. The only one I can see is to remove some metal from the base, but I can't believe Williams would have designed and sold it that way.
