I'm a pistol guy but I thought I might get a couple of rifles for my little collection. Do SKSs take hi cap mags? Are there reliable hi cap mags out there and where? Thanks

There are after-market hi-cap mags available for the SKS. Occasionally you hear of someone using one and it works ok, but for the most part they get frustrated with the unreliability and go back to the standard 10-round mag.

I've got a 30 round USA Mag for my SKS. It came with the rifle when I bought it. It works remarkably well. Enough so that whenever I go to the range I take it to use.

My uncle bbought a couple of those things for his SKS a few years ago. They worked okay, but they were a pain in the arse to change. He actually got more shots off just using the 10-round stripper clip.

I've got one of the plastic 30-rounders that came with my SKS. Take my advice, stay away from the plastic ones. Avoid them like the plague. They are a brainchild of Satan. Is there any confusion regarding my feelings towards the plastic SKS mags? I should hope not. It's darn near impossible to reload with stripper clips, as the mag has to stay in the weapon to do so, and the bolt keeps wanting to come forward after the first stripper is fed into it. When I try to reload by hand, it starts getting tough to put any ammo into it after about 20 - 25 rounds. They don't want to seat properly. Also, the spring and follower like to stick about an inch or so down, causing the weapon to have feeding problems every so often.

As soon as I can afford it, I'll be buying one or two metal 30-rounders and a 10 rounder. I also have a flush-fit 5-round mag, but that thing is about as useless as, well, I think ya'll can guess what it's as useless as. (Art's grammaw may be reading this, so I'll keep it civil.)

Exactly. That's precisely what I did with several friends eventually following suit.
If someone wants something similar in size and caliber with a higher magazine capacity, the AK variants are selling cheap these days.

OEF_VET,
Don't tell me a funny fellow such as yourself doesn't appreciate those super-nifty removable thumb-assisted loading buttons to help speed things along.
:D

That zytel mag was my first high capacity mag for my SKS as well. The sticking follower was exactly why I tossed it (actually, I believe it's still around somewhere, as I just saw those super-snazzy thumb buttons the other day).
I bought three USA steel mag and I'll tell you, my experience with them wasn't much more pleasing. I gave all three away (to someone I think would've cussed me if he hadn't received them for free).
Good luck
