I have an SKS-M and am considering staining the stock black and topping that with a flat poly. I like the original stock but hate the blonde color of the wood and dont want a tapco.
I got the itch to change my SKS and did the following.
Went to a gun show. Spent $5 dollars on a SKS stock. did everything I wanted to it, had fun, used it for a while, got sick of it, put original back on and was glad I didnt to it to the original stock.
I suggest getting a replacement wood stock to play with and keep the original one.........original. No harm, no foul!
you could try taking a spare stock and stripping it, and staining it walnut or something. I've never been satisfied with a black or gray stains. I did an OD green and a cherry red that look ok. on 10/22's anyway.
