Small rifle primer in 357 mag

Just looked in the Vihtavuori load data on their website and the 357 mag (and 357 maximum) data used small rifle primers, not small pistol magnum primers. Is there any issues I should worry about before I try this? This would be a great fix for me because I got caught with my pants down, no SPM primers, but lots of SR primers and N110

I strongly suspect it's a mis-print, but I don't know!

small rifle primers

It won't hurt a thing to use small rifle primers in your 357 loads. Most loads for the 357 calls for small pistol magnum primers. This is to help stop primer flow back and to ignite the extra powder in the 357 load. The small rifle primer will do the same thing.
I load small rifle primers in my sons 40s&w and his 38super guns that he uses in IPSC matches.

Yes, but these are 4.0 grain charges in Cowboy Action loads running very low pressure he is asking about!

Cowboy loads

I think that the reason they want to use it in cowboy loads is because of the small amount of powder that is being used. With that little amount of powder it will fall to the bottom of the case and is sometimes hard to ignite. Hogdens makes a powder that is susposed to help with this problem.

hodgdon "clays" is the most position insensitive powder i`ve ever used.
be careful with it it`s a very low density powder !!

I have used small rifle primers with VV N110 with outstanding accuracy results in my 10" Contender 357 magnum.

It might not be misprint, as using a small magnum pistol primer or small rifle primer to ignite very small amounts of powder in a larger mostly empty case volume, is sometimes a remedy for ignition issues.

The hotter flame of a rifle primer will change pressures to some degree, but in very light loads it's not an issue. Being sure your hammer has enough wack to set off the srp might be though.

Try emailing them for comformation either way for peace of mind.

hodgdon universal clays is the BEST pistol powder ive used. i shoot it in my 45 lc, 45 acp,38s and 357 mags,32 H&R mag,ect........
