Smith 686-3 3”?

This is a bit embarrassing but as it turns out it was not a 686 at all. It is a 66 Dash three. I wasn’t bamboozled but the people selling the gun didn’t know anything about guns. I paid $600 for it. I don’t think it’s been fired. I have the original retail ticket for $349. I’ll play around with it.

I would like some day to purchase a S&W 686, 4 inch revolver even though I already have a model 66-2 that has been tuned by a qualified gun smith and as they say, it is as smooth and light as a baby's bottom.

I have always preferred S&W revolvers even though I have seen some really great Ruger D/A revolvers of late. Oh the quest goes on.

There's a 66-2 3" listed on gunbroker. The current bid is $1,501.01.
I'd say you did better than if it had been a 686.

Sounds like you did some serious horse tradin' there! As long as you're happy with what you got out of the deal, then you're way ahead of the game. Let us know how things go at the range with your new S&W line-up; especially that 3" Model 66!

LGS around here has a 3" 66 on consignment for $1750; if I could find one of those rare guns for $600, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat. While 4" is nice all around if you only have 1, the 3" carries much better and the 5" 686 makes for better nightstand duty.

I am pretty sure that this 66 hasn’t been fired there’s no primer ring and no flame mark. The above 66-2 went for $1600. I am a firm believer that anything over priced should be sold and replaced with something just as useful yet not as boutique. I am utilitarian. I also hate to shoot it and ruin its virginal status. At one of 2500, it might also be my first safe queen. Regarding smith revolvers, yeah, they are the standard which I now measure others. I have a 6” GP100 that I love and load for. That model 10 fills a niche I was missing, and the bodyguard is my daily carry now.
