I was wondering if anyone knows about the Smith & Wesson 22a. I want a 22 pistol to shoot. I got an ad in and Gander Mtn. has them for $200 with the 5 1/2"in. bull barrel.

My dad has one. Grip isn't the most comfortable but its a solid 22 auto for the price.

I taught my wife how to shoot using one. Accurate and reliable. She has since moved on to other guns but keeps coming back to that 22A.
It is a good value on a fun accurate gun.
If you plan on using the rail be sure your choice of optic mounts is compatable with the rail. In general all Weaver individual ring mounted dots/scope will work. You will be able to find a place on the rail to work with these. Cheap red dots that have a intergrated Weaver/Picatinny mount will need some mods on the red dot and may need some mods on the rail slots to work.
Early guns broke the frame. The plastic recoil buffer is thin and prone to wear. They are available from Brownells and cheap get plenty. For consistant firing the recoil spring should be replaced every 5k or so. Easy to clean. Mags are reasonable and reliable. The mag release on the front of the grip is strange but easy to use.

I have one & it is a lot of fun & very accurate & reliable. For the money it is hard to beat. I would buy another in a heartbeat. With the high cost of ammo anymore, it's the only way to go. NRA PATRON LIFE MEMBER

I did the unthinkable today on my lunch break and bought one without first researching it online, just the advice of the gun-store owner (very trustworthy guy though).
Time to go buy a brick of ammo and kill some paper. Should be an excellent weekend

Bumping this to get some more input. I will be picking mine up next week and shooting, it also. The bull barrels that are available, anyone interchange them and what optics do you like or do you just shoot open sights?

I love mine. The barrels interchange easily. Put a cheap red dot on it and it's an absolute tack driver.PLUS it has a lifetime 100% warranty from S&W.

I used to have one but sold it to get my Beretta 92. It was a good gun for a while but later suffered alot of jams and misfires. At one point, i had a jam or misfire after each time it fired correctly. you really cant expect firearms that use 22LR to be reliable, unless you buy expensive ammo, but this gun was a below average gun IMO.

I will shoot only the 40 grn ammo in it that is hi vel 1255+ will be condition.
Copper coated or lead will be fine I believe. I am interested in how others cleaned it with a rod or a snake of sorts. Some drop weighted string down the barrel and do it that way. From the breech or the front, "she no matter" if you do it with the string.

The barrel comes off very easy and can be cleaned from the breech. The manual will have instructions.
With HiVelocity ammo you may need a new buffer fairly often. Brownells has them, a couple of bucks each, get a bunch.
Rod or Bore Snake your call. I scrub the chamber with a brush and bore snake the bore. The slide and firing pin channel are open and easy to clean. Cleaning is as easy as it gets.

I pick it up today, I'll read what they send with the pistol. If the 36 grain works pushing the slide back and is cheaper, I'll use that.
The reason I use the 40 grain in my kit slides is to make sure you are getting as much recoil as possible for they are moving the whole slide and not just a very small portion like the 22's do. Thanks for the information about the buffers.

Ok I might order one Tuesday but was wondering 51/2" bull barrel or 7" light barrel. I was leaning towards the bull barrel because it only $20 more but is still only $285 total. Is there any differences. I was thinking a 7" might be better because a 22 would get better velocity.

Used both the 40 grain and the 36 grain, worked flawlessly all the time...Hundreds of rounds through it not a problem, none, zip, nada...
I have the shorter barrel and it is just fine, depends on you and what you want, the pistol is heavy at 32 oz's with out the bull barrel. I really like it...

i have both a 22A and a beretta NEOS while there both ugly as sin i like my beretta a tad more grip is nice and comfy and i think buds has the neos for around $200 or so

Mine has the 5 1/2 barrel. I love it.
It runs on Federal bulk pack you buy at Wally World most of the time (Wifes Rugers choice ammo).
I've also run it on Winchester Bulk pack with no problems.
It has even run on Remington Golden bullets Bluk Pack with no problems.
It hates the light hyper velocity "Sptifires" thou (misfires every 2 rounds or so for some reason, but her Ruger runs fine on them).
These Smith 22A's are fine plinking pistols and even (dare I say) capable of being competitive (with proper ammo) at most local club level matches. I really like mine well worth the $200.00 I paid.

Thanks I am still wondering about the velocity difference between the different length barrels. would the velocity I would gain from the longer barrel be worth it. I ask if it is worth it because I was planning on the 51/2" bull barrel because I don't think it will make a dramatic difference seeing this is for plinking at the range. Though I want the more accurate one.
