Recently aquired a S&W NM #3 in 44-40. Does any one know what the survivability was of this model I know there were about 2000 made and about 700 were later converted to 44 russian. looking for info

These were built on a special frame with a longer (1 9/16") cylinder. But as you pointed out sales were not what S&W hoped they'd be so remaining frames and cylinders were made up into guns chambered in .44 Russian. A few (74) were chambered in .38-40, but they didn't take off either.

For additional information check out www.armchairgunshow.com and address your questions to Jim Supica. He can also quote you a current value.
