I'm just about to purchase a range membership and finally get back into shooting after the big XC move. I've had a new Marlin 1894 sitting in the safe since February that I haven't had a chance to shoot yet.

One of my concerns is getting my rifle from my apartment to my car without anyone knowing I'm a gun owner. Unfortunately, my apartment complex has really gone downhill recently as evidenced by an increase of what I call garbage person behavior. I really don't want anyone around here knowing that I own guns.

I'm looking for a locking container of some kind that doesn't scream, "GUN CASE, PLEASE STEAL FROM ME". I've considered buying a locking guitar case, but that just advertises a different expensive theft target.

I just googled:

fly rod case length 38 inches

you should be able to find something that would work there.

(if your neighbors watched you move a gun safe into the apt, this may be moot point?)

Get a decent gun screwdriver set ($20 or so from Chapman) and remove the buttstock when transporting by person. It will at least reduce the overall length and make it less obvious, and open up more ideas for carrying it in and out. It will eventually wear the screw slot somewhat. Buy a spare if it bothers you. Id just keep the correct size tip and handle in the shooting bag so its always handy rather than messing with the entire set each time.

When removing the buttstock, dont wiggle it up and down, that can crack/chip the thin edges of the stock, it should be pulled straight back off the tangs. If its tight, it will loosen some after removing a few times.

Something else I do by habit when carrying long guns, cased or not, is carry them vertical and close to the body on my left side. It reduces the "gun" signature. It wouldn't likely fool anyone you were in very close proximity to, but from casual observation from a distance it makes it less obvious w3hat you are doing or have.

Taking off the stock and replacing it will lead to damaged parts sooner or later. Baseball, golf, or any bag long enough should work.

Make sure that the guitar case says "First Act" on it and no one in their right mind will want to steal it. :)

Might want to consider moving, again.

Might just be me, but, I ain't gonna live in a place that I have to put a gun in a guitar case or some such, to take it to my vehicle...to keep my neighbors from knowing.

I would move across the tracks.

Tennis Racquet Bag?

A buddy has one that fits a folding stock AK or M4 type with stock collapsed perfectly.

Just my .02,

I carry mine in a recurve bow case.

I guess if you use a decoy bag, you should be prepared to say which golf course, archery range, lacrosse field/pitch/rink, you like...

A beach chair bag. The folding chairs have some pretty big bags. I've used a tennis racket bag for a pistol before, just don't throw your hearing protection around your neck, grab your range bag and your "racket" and expect to fool anyone...

When I lived in a condo I used a soft guitar case. Folks often struck up conversations about a guitar. I usually replied I was just starting to,learn how to play. That way I didn't need to know much details or music lingo in case the person was heavily into guitars and music.

One of the ways to appear less attractive is to use a cover that is for an activity that's not popular among the target population.
Rolling tool cases might be one idea, but the thugs will want to steal the tools inside.
You might consider (as mentioned) racket, bat, and other sporting equipment bags, and there's the possibility of a bag for a cheap outdoors tent.

I've had good success with lining bags with cut up GI mattress pads secured with aerosol glue to keep things from shifting.

Have you considered a home made carrier from PVC tubing and carrying an El Cheapo fishing rod for local color?

I had a problem not that long ago with sneaking a sidearm into a job where it wasn't permitted. I got around it by putting Velcro patches with Biblical quotes on my Maxpedition bag and letting everyone see a thick Bible prominently on my desk. After awhile they all associated the bag with the Bible and no one suspected it had been repurposed.
