I just recalled how for about a few hours to a day, durring the beginning of the entire event(I believe it had flooded by then) reports of one or more snipers shooting at police and evacuees. And have since heard nothing about it.

I would expect that if someone was really out there shooting at the helicopters as reported, and police there would be some sort of investigation. I mean there were saying for a good number of hours that they couldn't land because of gunfire.

And yet I've never heard of who died. Who was doing it. How many. I never heard of any bodies. It just disappeared. And I have to wonder was it real?

Can anyone help me with this?

edit: a few links I rummaged up

It appears the stories of snipers were akin to the stories of hundreds of bodies rotting at the Superdome; rumors blown out of proportion and spread by the media with no effort to verify.

Yeah - if there's no photo-op, the incident in question probably never happened. Some middle-manager would trot the bullet-riddled conveyance out, and explain to the media about what was going on. No bullet holes = _really_ bad aim, or nothing really happening.

That's one of the primary reasons I doubt the government story about Waco - if the guys inside had really been shooting, the vehicles and trailer(s - I dismember...) woulda had a whole buncha photogenic holes in 'em.

I wondered for a bit why I didn't see any stations try to capitalise on the other's bad reporting, but I guess they all reported it and just decided to keep quiet and cover their own...

"Where the police in question gun confiscators?" -Oleg Volk

+1 to that

I was suprized that more police didn't fall in the commission of their blatantly criminal acts.

When the water started rising there were reports of people using shotguns or other weapons to shoot through their roof from inside their attic so that they could climb to the outside. They needed to get to the top of their roof so helicopters could rescue them. This may have been where some stories came from. There was no 911 when things started happening. People were calling the local radio station that kept up its service throughout the storm. People would call and give their address with hopes that someone with an emergency service department was listening and would go get them. If I recall someone calling in was saying that they had to shoot holes in the wood in order to weaken it so that they could break through.

There was a story I saw on CNN or Fox after I left that a man was shooting at a helicopter and they returned fire.

Incidents like these might keep people from thinking George W. Bush was responsible for the whole New Orleans fiasco. The media is happy to forget.

And if there's not a body, the local authorities sure won't report it - that's nothing new, except in this case it's easy to make bodies "disappear" too. Look who's in charge down there. The politicians were camping out in Baton Rouge or taking bribes, while the cops were grabbing guns from citizens and looting Cadillac dealerships & Wal*Marts. As a New Orleans native, this really isn't anything new to me.

One fella reported to me...

that some of the shooting was at night, to signal that they were *there*...they didn't have flares, and the sky was dark, and they were on dark roofs. they could see the choppers, but the choppers couldn't see them.

That was from a fella I met who is an evacuee. He isn't going back.

Its still hard for me to believe that americans in uniform went out to disarm americans who were defending their homes.

I know it happened.

But... dang its just hard to wrap your mind around.

Maby a soldier is a soldier, fowlowing orders regardless, whether they're american, or russian, or nazi.

I just want to think better of our men in uniform.

Sniper reports were like things like transformers blowing, and getting
reported as gun fire.

Also the one instance where a helicopter got shot at, circumstances
unknown, got reported over and over every half hour until the public
got the impression every helicopter was taking gunfire.

The big problem with the N.O.La disaster was the news media had
no news and filled the airways with repeats, rumors and idle chat.
Kinda like the Web.

The channel 2 footage showed California Highway Patrol disarming a
little old lady, Patricia Kronie, and dislocating her shoulder in the process.
Not quite the same as americans uniformed or not.

(Sorry, I am still bitter about THAT.)
